Rightward Tilt Leaves Obama With Party Rift
The New York Times ^ | July 30, 2011 | JACKIE CALMES

WASHINGTON — However the debt limit showdown ends, one thing is clear: under pressure from Congressional Republicans, President Obama has moved rightward on budget policy, deepening a rift within his party heading into the next election.

Entering a campaign that is shaping up as an epic clash over the parties’ divergent views on the size and role of the federal government, Republicans have changed the terms of the national debate. Mr. Obama, seeking to appeal to the broad swath of independent voters, has adopted the Republicans’ language and in some cases their policies, while signaling a willingness to break with liberals on some issues.

That has some progressive members of Congress and liberal groups arguing that by not fighting for more stimulus spending, Mr. Obama could be left with an economy still producing so few jobs by Election Day that his re-election could be threatened. Besides turning off independents, Mr. Obama risks alienating Democratic voters already disappointed by his escalation of the war in Afghanistan and his failure to close the Guantánamo Bay prison, end the Bush-era tax cuts and enact a government-run health insurance system.

Am I the only guy who can predict the end of this? Deal will crash and burn and Obama will go on National TV and blame the Republican “Far Right” for the “calamity”. This is sooooo predictable.

He needs to be challenged from the left in the primaries. A primary challenge is an early sign of an incumbent who is about to lose...

This doesn’t pass the smell test. NYSlimes is playing a gambit of some kind. In bizarro lib world, Obama is supposed to be a MODERATE. Moving to the right would make his a — gasp! — conservative.

I get the feeling that Hillary’s fire is out. I don’t think she wants to run for president anymore.

I could be wrong (it’s bound to happen at some point), but she seems awfully tired and burnt out on politics.

“He’s accommodated himself to the new reality in Washington,” said Tom Davis, a former House Republican leader from Virginia. “That’s what leaders do.”

No, leaders lead...they don't capitulate.

And that's what they're calling him over at DU..."Capitulator-in-Chief" LOL.

In this case, you're not predicting very well.

There is no way Obama is going to scuttle this deal. The reason he has given in on just about all of his demands at this late hour is that he does not want the default to happen on his watch.

One reason that Obama needs an agreement more than the Republicans do: He has predicted disaster without one. If there is no agreement but no disaster either, he comes off as a phony alarmist.

If the left is looking for a true blue loon...I'd say Kucinich is their man

...especially if he thinks he's going to be redistricted out anyway, he's got nothing to lose.

Now, imagine the dem debates with those 2 clowns on 1 stage, with Kucinich ripping Obama apart calling him a neo-con for his Afghanistan war build-up and catering to all the wall street crooks by signing onto tax cuts "for the rich", etc..

Oh man....popcorn city.

Make it so.
