Kennedy, Romney battle for the middle (Archive- Romney Promising to Move Left)
Boston Globe Archive ^ | 1994

Indeed, asked in late summer by a gay group whether he supported recognition of gay marriage, [Kennedy, Romney] made clear just how much he has modeled himself on Weld. Romney said he "stood with Gov. Weld" in believing "it is not appropriate at this time." He added: "I am sure he will study it and evaluate it and I will endorse his position on that."

The Kennedy camp clearly hopes those ads can drive a wedge between Romney and those Reagan or Silber Democrats who might otherwise be interested in his themes of change. "This guy is the Darth Vader of working men and women in Massachusetts," said Kennedy campaign spokesman Rick Gureghian.

Romney has answered with an ad that uses George Hanna, father of a slain state trooper, to attack Kennedy for opposing the death penalty. The Romney camp just as clearly hopes that ad will reinforce doubts about Kennedy, particularly among independents and Democratic men.

I would look to something more recent than 18 years ago to gauge R.s opinion on this. If not, then you have to do the same for Newt 18 years ago.

Listen, you have two guys who have ideological flaws. Romney’s mistake is to pretend he is a Reaganaut. But he successfully governed a business, an Olympics and a very liberal state which would have been worse off without him.

Newt is a different type of leader, but he has flip-flopped as well. I really don’t know who I’ll vote for in the primary but I really don’t believe I am looking at a real clear choice at this point. We’re in IL so the decision will be most likely made for us by late March.

Moving to the middle is something we can expect anyone to do after winning the nomination.

Romney's "mistake" is being Romney - ugh! Not now, not ever, even if he manages to suck his way into the V.P. slot, that will cause me to not vote the "R" ticket. Mitt Willard Romney is anathema.

Read post #7 to see why we don't trust a word that Mitt Romney has to say.

You want to try and equivocate the change in positions that Mitt Romney has done with changes in issues positions that Newt Gringrich has done, but the record is crystal clear on this matter, Mitt Romney has made a habit of changing issue positions on every position near and dear to conservatives, Newt has not. True Newt has swerved from the conservative path from time to time, but he governed as a conservative.

All we have from Mitt Romney are words because when he was Governor, he governed as a progressive Democrat.

Furthermore, he has switched his positions back and forth on Gay Rights, DADT, Global Warming, Individual Mandate on Health Insurance and still holds the wrong positions on these issues.

Don't piss on me and tell me it's raining.

madameguinot uses the old and trite, "The liberals made him do it" defense, when she states:

But he successfully governed a business, an Olympics and a very liberal state which would have been worse off without him.

Mass. may have indeed gone down the liberal path without Romney at the helm but it's particularly egregious that a person identifying as a "republican" was pushing the liberal agenda to, not only get elected in a liberal state but to govern to the left of a Ted Kennedy once elected.

There's no trade mark or copy right on the word "republican" and anyone may call themselves one, similar to that idiot Fred Phelps, calling himself a Baptist or the likes of Nancy Pelosi calling herself a Catholic.

Romney's record of flips and flops isn't "news" any more, his record has been exposed for years right here at F.R. Neither is the fact that Romneybots get banned with regularity, hence the "soft" pedaling of Romney here.

Romney is a liberal, always has been and always will be, his supposed move to the right is for political expediency, nothing more and nothing less, he will say or do anything to get the nomination. You may think any politician would do the same but not one in my life time has come anywhere close to Romney in political whoredom.

Your assessment of Romney is based entirely on Gingrich’s assessment of him.

It wasn’t Romney that called Paul Ryan’s plan, “right wing social engineering’. In fact, Ryan and Yuval Levin of the Ethics and Public Policy Center endorse his overhaul of Medicare.

Gingrich’s stance on illegal immigration? If that’s not political pandering... You get the idea. So was Bain and any conservative knows it.

The primaries are the time to vet the candidates. My point is that going back 18 years to get ammo for the circular firing squad is pointless. Both candidates should be using that type of strategy on BO, Val Jarrett, Tim Geithner, Biden, Hillary now. This is the biggest vacation BO has had since he was elected, sitting back and watching the Republicans kill themselves.

My assessment of Romney goes back to long before I joined F.R. in 2003 and long before Gingrich was on the Presidential political circuit. To me Gingrich is talking about old news, things I already knew. It's good that he is reiterating it though for the uninformed on Romney.

Their are only two realistic choices left in the republican field, sorry Santorum fans but he's in single digits now, good man that he is. Between Gingrich and Romney, it's the proverbial "no brainer". Romney is a liberal, has always been a liberal and always will be and if you think I got that "news" from Gingrich, you're not thinking straight.

Keep soft pedaling Romney at your own peril, a mod or the boss will notice sooner or later.
