The way the electoral college works, there is a strong built in bias to have only 2 major political parties. At least in presidential politics.

The individual states cast their electoral votes, as they choose, according to laws and practices at the states’ level.

Maine and Nebraska split electoral votes, according to proportions.

If democrat and republican candidates both got 45% of the votes in a state, and libertarian got 6% of the votes, the libertarian would wield a lot of power.

The libertarian says he’ll direct his electors to vote for the republican (or democrat) for example.

More like European countries, in my example.

In the US we have had all-or-nothing electoral votes for most states. But that could change.
