Trump pulls off a stone-cold stunner (delicious piece!)

President Trump for once united Washington on Wednesday — in shock.

Republicans and Democrats alike were left scratching their heads after the president did a deal with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) over the express wishes of the most senior members of his own party. Trump signed up to terms proposed by the Democrats on government funding, which would soon have run out, and the nation’s debt ceiling, which would soon have been hit.

Crucially, another funding measure and another hike in the debt ceiling will be required before the end of the year.

That’s a big problem for GOP leaders including Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who wanted a longer-term deal, kicking the next likely debt-ceiling increase beyond the midterm elections in November 2018.

Why did Trump do it?

People in his orbit say that the president was demonstrating to GOP leaders that they do not have the whip hand — and that, if they repeatedly fail to move his agenda, the commander in chief is willing to look elsewhere.

“I think it’s a warning shot,” said Barry Bennett, who was a senior adviser to Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. “If the Republicans can’t come together as a majority to do something, the president knows where to get more votes.”

Beyond the ranks of Trump loyalists, however, the dominant reaction was one of perplexity. “I find it very difficult to understand,” said Doug Heye, a former communications director for the Republican National Committee. “Clearly a long-term Republican majority and the long-term health of the Republican Party are not priorities for Donald Trump.”

A couple of tidbits:

Manley added: “One of the things it shows me is that [Trump] just doesn’t care or understand how the Hill operates. There is nothing the Republican leadership hates more than rounding up votes for the debt limit. And he has now forced them to take votes twice on it.”

The move is a particular embarrassment for Ryan. On Wednesday morning, the Speaker had dismissed the parameters of the Democratic proposal as “ridiculous” and “disgraceful,” only to see the president endorse them a few hours later.

Ryan had no immediate public comment on the deal.

Keep dragging your feet, Mitch and Paul, this is what you’re gonna get!

The two of them look supine and powerless...when they hold ALL the power!!

Ryan has been on the opposite end of whatever Trump says or does since the beginning. He couldn’t even support the pardon of Arpaio which was a no brainer. Somebody has some bad dirt on Ryan (in my opinion).

By all appearances Trump just sent one huge message to Rino Paul and Rino Mitch. It would seem that the cost to Trump’s main agenda is minimal. Somehow, I doubt these two idiots will get the message. More likely, Trump will have to beat them over the head a few more times.

DJT is no fool.
He can plainly see what is so evident to us all, if we are only willing to face up to it...

He does NOT enjoy a working majority in Congress. The D’s still control Congress (and especially the Senate, where they have a handful of fake R’s who are quite reliable D votes)

so...if he wants to get anything done, he has to work with the D’s.

Very very painful to have to type that, but there it is.
As long as Arizona keeps sending its embarrassing senators, and as long as Lindsay and Collins and maybe a couple more are still in there......................the D’s run the show on most any major issues they wish.

we need a big national campaign, well funded for sure, to replace at least 5 or 6 of the worst offenders, anyways

Trump is playing a dangerous game.

What about the next SCOTUS opening? Is he going to work with Pelosi and Schumer on that too?

I would rather have Trump stand his ground and let the RINOs get primaried than to work with the Democrats.

It seems to me Trump DOES know how Washington works that’s why he did this. It makes me puke hearing the worthless RINOs complain when they have done nothing.

Yo, Paul,

Where’s your Budget?

Ryan wanted a long CR now so later he could have a lobbyist written and pork stuffed omnibus spending bill jammed through at the midnight hour. POTUS is pumping the breaks on business as usual in the swamp.

Beyond the ranks of Trump loyalists, however, the dominant reaction was one of perplexity. "I find it very difficult to understand," said Doug Heye, a former communications director for the Republican National Committee.

Yeah, who could have imagined an RNC insider would come up with this? Just everyone who recognizes the GOPe for what it is, and most people do. That's all.

"Clearly a long-term Republican majority and the long-term health of the Republican Party are not priorities for Donald Trump."

I'll bet this poor schlep didn't think Trump had a prayer of being elected either.

The GOPe is still lost in space, circling Uranus look for Klingons.
