JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Owners of hybrid and electric vehicles in Mississippi received a notice from the state Department of Revenue informing them of the new annual tax on their vehicles.

The new tax, which took effect on October 1, will tax $75 for hybrid vehicles and $150 for total electric vehicles annually.

The tax is in addition to regular tag fees and must be paid at vehicle registration or renewal.

Cathy Waterbury, The associate commissioner of the Department of Revenue and she said the revenue attained from the tax will go towards the state’s highway fund, infrastructure and the Department of Transportation.

State residents that drive gas-required vehicles are taxed 18 cents for every gallon of gas they purchase. The revenue collected goes toward the state’s transportation and infrastructure fund.

“Raise the gas tax, I don’t know," said hybrid car owner Harry Baldwin. "There’s got to be other ways, but I always thought the gas tax was a fair way to go. You pay for what you use.”

State leaders adopted this new tax as an alternative to raising the gas tax.

The Democrats are worried that electric car owners will dodge the gas tax. I’m confident that they’ll fix that “loophole “.

This is a no brainer. Roads are supported mostly by gas taxes because all cars use gas (or diesel), except now they don’t. So the others have to be charged differently to pay for the roads they use.

Raising the gas tax to compensate would obviously be stoooopid.

They were losing gas tax revenue from the more efficient hybrids and the electrics which use no taxed fuels.

Raising the gas tax would just provide more of an incentive to purchase electric vehicles and the problem would get even worse.

Yep. The thing I love about the way roads are generally paid for is that they are paid for by use, via a fuel tax. The only way to keep electric vehicles taxed just like other vehicles is to tax any electricity used by them.

Back in the day you could buy fuel for your farm vehicles that had no road taxes. To keep people from using it in their street vehicles, they put a die in it that would stain your carburetor. If they could do something like that for electric vehicles, they could simply tax the electricity they use and that would make it more equitable for all concerned.

Good.
Electric vehicles are a an infrastructure problem and hybrids use a $6500 battery that has a 5 year life expectancy.

You’d have to have a separate meter for your home charger.

Road tax based on how much gas the vehicle doesn’t burn. It’s all about the state getting its fair share for road up keep.

Exactly. Technology would probably allow that at a reasonable cost today, but that IS what you’d have to do.

It brings up another important topic: Electric cars use GOBS of electric power. If 20% of the population used electric cars, it would be a HUGE impact to our electric grid. We’d have no choice, if electrics become popular, to build a few dozon nuclear power plants.

eventually, it’ll come to a mileage tax. Course, that would be on top of the fees and gas tax.

But maybe spur the market for gas engine conversions. Maybe we’ll see Gas Monkey Garage put a 500 horsepower Corvette V8 in a Chevy Volt. Or a Tesla with a small Chinese diesel that runs on used bacon grease.
