The way the nation rallied around Truman, LBJ and Dubya during the Korean, Vietnam and Iraq Wars, denying Truman and LBJ second terms, and handing Dubya the honor of being one of the most unpopular presidents ever, upon his final term of office? Wars are terrible for approval ratings when prolonged or high casualty, and not particularly great even when clearly successful. Desert Storm did nothing for Bush Senior despite being the most successful and low-casualty in ever in American history.

This is not not even exceptional to the US. Churchill’s Conservative government lost power pretty much as soon as WW2 was pursued to a successful conclusion. And in the case of defeat or retreat, the political consequences are just as predictable - Anthony Eden lost his premiership after his attempt to retake the Suez Canal along with the French and the Israelis was thwarted by Eisenhower.
