Backlog of income tax returns is growing, delaying refunds to millions

The IRS is falling behind in processing millions of income tax returns, potentially delaying refunds for many Americans.

According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, an independent arm of the IRS focused on tax filers' rights, the agency is holding almost 31 million returns for manual processing just ahead of the May 17 tax filing deadline. That backlog has grown by 2 million returns since mid-April, National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins told CBS MoneyWatch.

"I was hoping it would go down, but I'm not that optimistic," she said of the logjam. "Taxpayers will continue to experience unusually long delays. I don't think anyone wants to hear that, but that is the case."

We filed electronically a little over 3 weeks ago and we are STILL waiting for our refund. Anyone else in the same boat? Come to think about it, has ANYONE even gotten their refund yet?

How can the IRS have a backlog when they have an EXTRA month this year to process the tax returns? IRS is now as INEPT as Chairman Xiden?

Well then, we should all do our patriotic duty and not file.

in a battle here with the significant other about this issue. At the rate we are going, folks are going to start asking the question: “is it worth it?”

Perhaps the best strategy is... Atlas Shrugged?

I filed paper in middle of Feb. Refund wire transfer arrived last ten days ago. So, about ten weeks. Our returns go to Texas so the weather could have something to do with it. Usually get refund in three weeks.

I’m still waiting for a refund for a return filed March of last year. IRS tells me the return is “still being processed.”

I’m still waiting for my 2019 tax return. I file in august with my business. My accountants told me the Irs just stopped doing them. So I never got any stimulus either which I don’t really care about either but my tax return would have helped. I’d like to stop paying all federal withholding taxes going towards if they are just going to keep my return for an extra year. I’d rather just write them a check for what I owe. Very frustrating because there’s no body you can call either .

I have tried to file and it keeps getting rejected (TT.com) saying my spouse’s AGI is wrong or pin is wrong. The AGI is correct. I do not want to mail this in and get refund in a year!

Don’t worry, I mailed my big check to Uncle Sugar 2 weeks ago, and they already cashed it, you and a few dozen others should be getting your check soon now.

I always apply my overpayment to the following years taxes, and then just withhold less. So I am giving myself a refund, I don’t need to wait for the IRS. This year my overpayment was $3K, so I had $3K less withheld from my IRA distribution.

My brother and his family filed in January. They’re owed a refund. They’re still waiting.

IRS told their tax accountant that the treasury was “out of money” for refunds and hoped to have more soon.

We’re all screwed. We’re past the tipping point.

We filed in February, almost the earliest possible date. File electronically and still awaiting substantial refund.

I try to do it so I have close to zero as possible. I try not to owe nor get a refund.

It has worked pretty well over the years.

Were we supposed to get another return of our tax $ last round? I sort of lost track.

People who get refunds are paying to much up front and depriving themselves of that money for the year.

It amounts to them making an interest free loan to the government.

The best scenario is for the taxpayer to owe nothing or else a very small amount at years end.
