Swimming caps designed for natural hair banned from Tokyo Olympic Games

Swimming caps designed for natural Black hair — and created by a Black-owned company — will not be allowed at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) rejected an application submitted last year by the British brand Soul Cap for its products to be officially recognized. The decision means the caps cannot be worn at the upcoming Games, the company said.

Soul Cap makes swimming caps designed to protect thick, curly, and voluminous hair. FINA said the caps do not follow "the natural form of the head," Soul Cap told BBC News.

"We hoped to further our work for diversity in swimming by having our swim caps certified for competition, so swimmers at any level don't have to choose between the sport they love and their hair," co-founders Toks Ahmed and Michael Champman wrote in a statement shared on social media.

The company recently partnered with Alice Dearing, who qualified last week to be the first Black female swimmer to represent Great Britain at the Olympics. FINA celebrated her historic accomplishment at the time.

Dearing, who co-founded the U.K.'s Black Swimming Association, has been working to raise awareness for years. "Whilst the chlorine damages and dries out everyone's hair, arguably it is harder for Black women — hair can be so intertwined with our identity and the water completely changes the quality of it," she wrote in a 2019 essay.

Chlorine is racist.

1. CBS
2. Poorly written article. No reason given for why caps were banned.
3. No pictures of cap - indicating that our thorough despicable media does not want us to see the pic - which just might explain a reason the committee banned it.

Conclusion: Something smells a lot like “fetid journalist” here.

Why would anybody who swims want a full head of hair that would simply cut down on their efficiency in the water???

Should have modified that “no pic of cap” to say that the pic included gives no clue as to what’s on the unseen part that might have cause the ban.

Yep lots of races are won by a mere fraction of a second. The swimmers usually shave off all body hair. The US media will push a racist theme.

They’re available on Amazon. Based on the picture (which I don’t know how to post after 23 years) I don’t think they offer an advantage to anyone wearing one. But it doesn’t follow the contour of the head per the rules. But we all know rules are racist.

The rules are not racist, the cap maker is racist. The product is racist

Exactly. Those things do not appear to help swimmers at that level get the...don’t know the word...fluidity or lack of traction, perhaps smoothness that a high-caliber swimmer would need.

As you mentioned, Olympic swimmers often shave off their body hair. That’s just how delicate it is. It could mean a tenth of a second. Or something like that. :)

Because they want to look pretty that evening at the Olympic Village and be able to use one of the free condoms they pass out.

Any swimmer who is upset about this is not a serious Olympian.

No interest in watching this year. It has become too political.

BLM nonsense has ruined sports.

I’m trying to understand how hair can be intertwined with one’s identity. A person is the same regardless of the hair. Identity is what a person is and has been since birth. Hair is a changeable attribute.

Too philosophical an analysis?
