Afghanistan’s professional class of men and women, part of a generation that came of age under the shield of the U.S. military, are weighing the danger of rapidly advancing Taliban forces. Many are packing their bags...
Long before President Biden announced the U.S. withdrawal in April, hundreds of thousands of Afghans had fled to Europe, Australia and the U.S. Now, many of the well-educated people who prospered in the new Afghanistan and hadn’t dreamed of leaving have also concluded that staying put is no longer an option.

The ethnic Hazara minority community (descendants of the Mongols) has particularly prospered during the Pax Americana period, becoming skilled, educated and financially successful.
They can expect the worst oppression of all under the Taliban. Many of them are of the Shi'ite sect of Islam, reviled by Sunni extremists. The whole Hazara ethnicity is subject to long-running animosity from the largely ethnic Pashtun Taliban.
The Taliban had a saying about the other ethnicities in Afghaistan, the last time they came to power: "Uzbeks to Uzbekistan, Tajiks to Tajikistan, and Hazara to Goristan (the graveyard). We could possibly see large scale refugee movement of Hazara Shia into Iran, if the Taliban take over completely.
Many other skilled, educated and successful Afghans, including many Pashtuns, now have relatives in other Countries, including loads in wealthy Western Countries, with high standards of living. Afghan language (Dari, Pashto) broadcasts from these Countries have opened the eyes of most reasonably educated Afghans of the quality of life elsewhere (and how to get there).
It is going to be hard to keep those folks on the 14th century Tali-farm, after they have seen life in the big city.
Great..the next set of boat people...
They can flee to someplace that isn’t here.
L
And here comes the next wave of refugees to hit Europe.
Here they come....fantastic.
I’m sure the Iranians and Turks are already collaborating to allow hundreds of thousands of Afghani refugees to cross to make their way into Europe, and ultimately the US.
The last few years’ refugee influx into Europe (supposedly Syrian War refugees) included high numbers of Afghans.
Germany had a significant Afghan immigrant community before that wave, and they really swelled.
A lot of Afghan language music videos are produced there, and it is a dream for many Afghans to live the freedoms and fashionable lifestyles they see, of the beautiful people in those videos.
After Europe though, the USA is probably the most desired location.
Lots have family in other nice Countries, like Canada and Australia, and very many have connections (like education) throughout Russia and the former Soviet Union Republics in Central Asia. Turkey is another popular option. Pakistan and Iran absorbed millions during the Soviet occupation and Civil War periods.
The difference with this wave, will be the higher percentage of quality immigrants - better educated, skilled and wealthier (there will still also be a lot of lower quality inbreds and criminals as well) - but a lot of the cream of the crop could flee. It is going to hurt the Nation of Afghanistan more to lose this wave, even more than it did to generally lose a lot of young men on the last go round.
This is why we need to be careful who we have a war with. Every war results in a flood of immigration. Even a firefight like Blackhawk Down resulted in half of Mogadishu flooding into Minnesota and them getting one of the skinnies getting elected to Congress.
When America plays with a turd, we get crap on our national fingers.
Had no idea. Thanks for your knowledgeable post.
Burkhas, beatings and bullets.
Biden, Harris, Blinken, Austin, the AF Academy leadership, W. Point leaders, the whole fucking US Navy leadership, the White House staff and the Democrats/teachers/media think that the 14th century was a fine time to be alive. They want others to live in it, not them.
They are like the people who thought that the Khmer Rouge was just a bunch of kids and would be nice to their parents, many of whom they had to personally kill and send the country back to Pol Pot’s “Year Zero”.
Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Tojo, Castro, Pol Pot, Mao, Xi, etc. all approve of what is happening there and thank the American Left for making it possible.
quote: Cop...."I spent the better part of 30 minutes this morning, on the shoulder of U54, speaking to a truck driver whom had been speeding. As soon as I walked up to the truck, I had a feeling it would not be a typical stop....
The man I had stopped identified himself as a born and raised Muslim from Afghanistan. He explained how he spent 7 years, 2012-2019, as a translator for the US Army and US Marines in Afghanistan and Iraq, intercepting radio signals and relaying them to fighters in battle. He explained how the USA in his eyes is the greatest country in the world and the people in this country whom are trying to tear it apart, have no idea what it’s like to grow up where he did, a war torn country, where they would kill you for going against the grain.
He recognized the fact that I was a white law enforcement officer and that his skin was not the same as mine, but not one time did he ever feel unsafe to be stopped. He then asked for a picture and showed me hundreds of photos of himself on the battle field in the Middle East, with American soldiers. He was even more proud of his dog tags still around his neck and his military ID.
This gentleman left me with one final thing. He stated, “if only Americans could see this country from the outside looking in, all of this would stop”.
Yawn. Women’s rights, especially for non-westerners, is not a conservative cause.
Can’t say I as an American or a westerner give a turd.
My Afghan translator lived in my house for eight months when he emigrated, during which his son was born (while I was in Iraq). He is now a full US citizen, and proud to be.
Now a hard working suburban homeowner, he served with assorted US forces for six years before getting a Special Immigrant Visa, and did several six month contracts afterward. He walked multi-day long foot patrols with Marines in Helmand, and confronted armed groups of over a hundred banditos, on behalf of a handful of Special Operators- more adventures than you could shake a stick at.
He saw a lot of hard duty and took a lot of personal risk - saw a lot of blood and death close up, and was personally targeted for death by the Taliban for collaborating with Americans - but kept the job for over two more years, spending hours each day taking different long routes between home and work, looking over his shoulder. Several of the other translators were eventually killed (3 that I had met).
Love the guy like a brother.
That’s sad for her. But I could post a photo of my daughter here. That girl in the photo has a psycho brother, a crazy uncle, etc. THAT nut will eventually hate us because after all it was US that ruined his country in his mind.
Then one day he sets off a bomb, shoots up a nightclub, or drives a rental truck down a sidewalk.
I care much more that my daughter never meets her crazy relative that way. She needs to go to Dubai, Morocco, or Jordan maybe.
Pretty fair sized community in Germany, and I think 99-percent will simply aim for that region. I think it’s up to around 300,000 Afghans living in Germany today.
We got a wave of Afghans when the Soviets invaded. A bunch settled in Northern California, and around DC.
Hamid Karzai’s family had a restaurant in Alexandria Virginia.
