Florida’s Board of Education on Friday approved private school vouchers for families unhappy with public school districts requiring masks or other COVID-19-related measures.
Parents in the state now are allowed to access vouchers for private schools if they believe pandemic-related rules are “a health or educational danger to their child,” according to the state agency, local media outlets reported.
They could request vouchers under provisions that are generally used to protect children who believe they’re being bullied.
“‘COVID-19 harassment’ means any threatening, discriminatory, insulting, or dehumanizing verbal, written or physical conduct an individual student suffers in relation to, or as a result of, school district protocols for COVID-19, including masking requirements, the separation or isolation of students, or COVID-19 testing requirements, that have the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance,” says the new emergency rule around vouchers.
Board member Ben Gibson said that if school districts don’t comply, the Board of Education could hold up the transfer of state money.
“We’re not going to hurt kids. We’re not going to pull money that’s going to hurt kids in any way,” he said, reported local media, adding: “If a parent wants their child to wear a mask at school, they should have that right. If a parent doesn’t want their child to wear a mask at school, they should have that right.”
Florida state officials have been at odds with federal authorities over masking amid the COVID-19 pandemic, coming after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended late last month that all children regardless of whether they’ve been vaccinated or not should wear masks.
Several Florida school districts so far have decided to comply with the CDC’s recommendations.

What a brilliant move. If every gov did this, it would quickly relocate the sensible, likely conservative parents’ kids to their own separate schools, leaving the indoctrination centers to the lefties. The right can then build up a school system that focuses on education, work ethic, patriotism, and would likely have some good old-fashioned Christian teaching thrown in. Just brilliant.
OUTSTANDING news.
Private schools here in Memphis never missed a day. Way to go Governor DeSantis!
Depending on how they worded it, this can mean anything.
I am unhappy with the mask policy.
I am unhappy with the no-mask required policy.
Give my kids a voucher!
Wow.
Excellent
Awesome. I hope the Board has good, comprehensive legal advice and top-shelf litigators at the ready. They are going to need that and more once certain parties get up and running to fight this out in court before unforgivably credulous state and federal judges.
Outstanding!!!!
Amazing. I love Trump but Desantis has my vote. My #1 issue is students, children, in person excellent education, and maskless schools…
All states need to do this on permanent basis. Defund public schools!!!
I lived in a small town years ago and one day while deciding how to vote on the town school buudget, devided the budget by number of students. Was shocked to see it was $22,000 per student. I could have sent my kids to the most elite private school in the area for $17k. Conclusion: Public schools are a real piss poor value for the tax payer. I would bet the stare sending a voucher and withholding the per student dollars from the public school saves money.
Lemme guess: Duval, Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, Palm Beach, etc.

Not really. It only works if they can find a private school that mandates wearing mask, which I bet are few if any.
That’s wonderful. Conservatives have been pushing to have the money follow the child when it comes to education. Baby steps, and maybe we’ll see total education freedom very soon.
Now approve private school vouchers for families unhappy with public school districts teaching CRT.
A Private School, or Charter School gets about $7000 per year for FTE.
Here is the way the School District "reconstruct" their Operating Statement to hide the cost.
They don't consider the cost of Bonds to build the school buildings or the rent that Private Schools have to pay for a building and School Facility.
That 100 Million Dollar Public High School is free to the School Board, because it's paid off by Real Estate Taxes!
Public School Boards get "free" buildings and Private Schools do not.
Unconditional School Vouchers would still be going in the right direction.
DeSantis is our rock star....
