Texas Gov. Greg Abbott promised residents in the Lone Star state that the "lights will stay on" this winter following a near collapse of the state's electrical system last February.
Asked by Fox 7 for his thoughts and confidence about the power grid, Abbott said he is "very confident" as he "signed almost a dozen laws that make the power grid more effective."

One should not tempt fate.
Unless the laws translate into actual infrastructure, nature will do what it’s going to do.
Texans would be better off having learned not to take so much for granted and prepping for the possibility of bad weather.
Maybe off topic, but, a few thoughts :
1. Isn’t it a fact that nuclear plants give off no greenhouse gases? Isn’t it a fact that today’s nuclear technology produces far less nuclear waste, than the nuclear plants produced years ago? Yet we just don’t build nuclear plants anymore.
2. Isn’t it a fact, that coal fired power plants have been cleaned up quite a bit, so that they produce far less pollution than such plants did in years past? Yet we are shutting down coal fired power plants instead of building new ones.
3. In trying to supply the energy a modern society uses, why are we choosing to get away from proven reliable energy sources, especially considering that we have done a hell of a lot to clean up the environment in recent decades?
Really? He’s going to dynamite those windmills and replace them with nuclear plants?
Because that’s the only way he could guarantee that.
“...we just don’t build nuclear plants anymore...”
-
Two are under construction in Georgia at the moment.
Meanwhile, Governors in blue states help their residents by issuing additional masking mandates and lockdown orders.
Good to hear. It’s nice that we are still willing to build nuclear plants. I stand corrected.
Unless those laws have directly translated into more gas-fired, coal-fired and nuclear power plants (and no more wind and solar greenie projects) he must be hoping there isn’t a repeat of the weather last February, next year. Otherwise he won’t win the primary, if he’s running again.
When finally completed, the two new units at Georgia Power's Plant Vogtle are expected to have cost a total of some $26 billion. The initial estimate had been $14 billion, with the first of the new units coming online in 2016. As things stand now, the first of new units won't become operational prior to January 2022 at the earliest.
That's why not many utility companies are all that interested in investing in nuclear power generation nowadays. Much cheaper, and much easier, to install more gas-fired turbines and be done with it. Oh, and take advantage of the tax incentives that encourage investment in so-called "sustainable" energy sources (e.g., wind turbines).
Electric utility companies nowadays aren't run by former engineers who know anything about producing power. Most are run by liberal arts majors and green eye-shade types, and incompetent ones at that. The fiasco we saw play out last winter -- in Texas, of all places -- should tell people everything they need to know. The rot is widespread, and it runs deep.
The fact that he even has to say this is utterly shameful. His and Perry’s windmills and closing down coal plants screwed Texas. Handing over all the board positions on ERCOT to foreigners and out of staters was the cherry on the cake.
Globalists got paid for their “renewables”.
Coal. The plants are already there and waiting to be reactivated.
“...a dozen laws that make the power grid more effective.”
It’ll take more than just laws to fix the hardware and infrastructure problems of last February.
Isn’t it a fact that China builds coal fired power plants with no emissions controls which negates ANYTHING we do here? Also scrubbers consume @30% of the net generation capacity which is a huge loss for very little gains.
Is he going to nuke that concrete jungle of windmills out by abilene and sweetwater?
February 15, 2021, at 1:45 am, my electricity was shut off by ERCOT. Hard to forget, considering the outside temps.
Lucky for me, I’m on propane and I was able to run the stove top burners which exhaust thru the vent-a-hood and my inside temperature never got below 50. Many others were not so lucky. Some died.
Then the bastards overcharged a lot of people for electricity they never received.
Oh boy! More laws! Do thoses laws prevernt the windmills from freezing up or snow and ice from covering solar panels? Remember Abbott said he was going to finish the wall and stop the migrants too! All hat! No cattle!
“Remember Abbott said he was going to finish the wall and stop the migrants too! All hat! No cattle!”
What do you expect as he’s only half the man he should be.
He is not competent enough to say such things.
He hand picked the entire Board that was in charge of ERCOT.
Abbott needs to go.
The problem last winter is that the powerplants shut down due to the cold. The capacity was there (being able to handle summer loads in Texas assures enough capacity for winter loads), but the plants weren’t winterized against record cold. I suspect they’re better winterized this year, and the people who run these plants know they won’t get away with again lying about their plants - Abbott is not an idiot.
Waiting for someone ‘explain how signing bills generates power or gets it where its needed.
