Marine Le Pen, the hard-right leader making her third attempt to gain power, has surged over the past couple of weeks, as her patient focus on cost-of-living issues has resonated with the millions of French people struggling to make ends meet after an increase of more than 35 percent in gas prices over the past year.
The most recent poll from the respected Ifop-Fiducial group showed Ms. Le Pen gaining 21.5 percent of the vote in the first round of voting next Sunday, almost double the vote share of the fading extreme-right upstart Éric Zemmour, with 11 percent, and closing the gap on Mr. Macron with 28 percent. The two leading candidates go through to a runoff on April 24.
More worrying for Mr. Macron, the poll suggested he would edge Ms. Le Pen by just 53.5 percent to 46.5 percent in the second round. In the last presidential election, in 2017, Mr. Macron trounced Ms. Le Pen by 66.1 percent to 33.9 percent in the runoff.
“It’s an illusion that this election is won for Mr. Macron,” said Nicolas Tenzer, an author who teaches political science at Sciences Po university. “With a high abstention rate, which is possible, and the level of hatred toward the president among some people, there could be a real surprise. The idea that Le Pen wins is not impossible.”

Do they mean far right ‘extremist’?
The polls with larger sample size....all have her at 22/23 percent.
It’s lining up to be a repeat of the last election. As many problems as Macron has...the general public isn’t convinced that Le Pen is the answer. There is no doubt however on the 2nd primary, it’s Macron-Le Penn.

For the second round...55-45 Macron. April 2 last update.
Marine Le Pen, the hard-right leader …Anything but. Highly anti-American. Quite the flip-flopper too.
The frogs need Éric Zemmour.
Go ms le pen…so sick of these leftists in Europe ruining lives with their green crap when they are just getting rich off their own lies!
Yahoo! News refers to Macron as “centrist”...
It’s a laugh this commie is called far right.
Why would anybody want to re-elect a President who has his police beat on anti-vax demonstrators? SMH.
I prefer Eric Zemmour, but Marine Le Pen would be preferable to Macron. She would better be described as populist Left while Zemmour is populist right. Neither is “extreme” as the slimes claims. I think it almost certain that Zemmour’s voters will back Le Pen in round 2.
If Macron’s head gets mounted on the wall, it will be a really big L for the globalists. They hate Orban but Hungary is a relatively small country. France has real influence within the EU - which Le Pen deeply distrusts. Her in power would throw a real monkey wrench into the works.
She’s anti American deep state.....anti American Neo Con. She’s not anti Trump or anti America First. She basically has the same agenda for her country - which is understandable IMO.
On economic issues she’s definitely further Left than I am. If anything she’s a left leaning nationalist. They’re just calling her “far right” because she is a nationalist and because she’s anti EU.
The same old story. Hitler was a National Socialist who was the leader of the German Workers Party. He wanted big government, no individual rights, and everything tied to group ideology (some groups are good, some groups are bad). His big political competition consisted of socialists and communists who took their orders directly from Stalin in Moscow. Hitler was a socialist who was anti-Bolshevik. So -- of course! -- he's been branded "Far Right" ever since.
Excellent!
Hope she wins and fires up the Guillotine for Macron, Muslims and Frog Cops.
Viva Yellow Vests, let France repeat it's History Lesson.
Part of my family lives in France. One of the important factors is the number of French voters who have simply lost any hope of ever getting their country or culture back. A significant number of formerly urban native French have abandoned the cities and moved to the rural areas. Whether or not they will vote is an open question.
“More worrying for Mr. Macron,” should read “More worrying for hard-left leader Mr. Macron....”
The global media rule - there is no such thing as a “far-left extremist.”
If Macron thinks he’s in serious trouble, expect him to cheat. The Left’s new election strategy worldwide is “win at all costs.”
Hard-right leader Marine Le Pen versus extreme-right upstart Éric Zemmour. Do you see the pattern here?
Question: What is the difference between hard-right and extreme-right?
Answer: Both are not communist.
