Around 60 Russian paratroopers have staged a mutiny and refused to fight in Ukraine, local reports say.
The men, who were from key airborne forces headquarters Pskov in northern Russia, could now face jail sentences for the insubordination.
The refusenik troops had been moved to Belarus as part of the invasion force but after their mutiny were sent in disgrace back to their base in Pskov.
Some have been dismissed and branded 'cowards' while others are set to face the Russian equivalent of a court martial with likely jail sentences.
Defence minister Sergei Shoigu is reported to have sent one of his deputies to Pskov to handle the insubordination.

If true then this is very significant. Paratroopers are not ill trained, teenage conscripts. Can only imagine what is happening among the Russian rank and file as they take casualties, lose faith in their political and military leadership, and find themselves in a quagmire.

The Romans handled cowardly soldiers by decimating them - randomly executing one man out of every ten. I wonder if Putin is considering the same thing.
As a side note, one reason Tsar Nicholas was deposed is that he insisted that his troops continue fighting in an unpopular war (WW I). I wonder if Putin has considered that as well.

The VDV has also seen some of the worst loses in this war. By design they are lightly armored and fast moving. They were the tip of the spear sent into the Ukrainian cities in the first weeks of the war.
They learned very quickly what an ATGM does to an aluminum hulled BMP.

So Putin used the word “military”. That shows just how dumb he is. Obama and Hillary called their military intervention in Libya a “kinetic action”. And everybody loved them for it. Words matter, Mr. Putin.
