~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina

NCmcascherrypoint2

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point or MCAS Cherry Point is a United States Marine Corps airfield located in Havelock, North Carolina, United States, in the eastern part of the state. It was built in 1941, and was commissioned in 1942 and is currently home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

The air station and its associated support locations occupy approximately 29,000 acres. The heart of Cherry Point is its massive four-point runway system, which is designed to provide multiple approach and departure advantages to all aviators who have the opportunity to fly here. The air station’s runways are so long they served as an alternate emergency landing site for NASA during the years that the agency maintained a space shuttle program.

NCmcascherrypoint5

Reaching further out from the main air station area is Cherry Point’s system of ranges and auxiliary landing fields, which provide unique littoral training opportunities for 2d MAW as well as aviation and naval combatants across all U.S. and some foreign military services. Cherry Point’s influence in the region stretches even further with its 2015 expansion of air traffic control services to cover more than 9,000 square miles of airspace for military, civil and commercial air traffic.

NCmcascherrypoint4

Cherry Point is home to Marine Transport Squadron 1, which operated the well-known HH-46E search and rescue helicopters affectionately referred to as “Pedro” until the sundown of the squadron’s search and rescue mission in September 2015. In addition to its military search and rescue duties, Pedro also served the local community with its medical evacuation and search and rescue capabilities.

The Pedro helicopters flew their final flight on September 25, 2015, as the last flying H-46 airframes in the Department of Defense. The squadron continues to operate the McDonnell Douglas C-9 Skytrain and the Cessna UC-35 Citation II in support of worldwide personnel transport for DOD.

Howdy, Kathy.

Did you get some more sun time on the deck today? Got everything ready for the short work week ahead?

I think just yesterday I said our sister unit from Cherry Point went over during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I didn’t have to go. I don’t think they saw any combat, but the Headquarters Element was never overrun!

Hiya radu!

We have not seen real warm Spring temps which are way overdue.

BUT, the forecast starting tomorrow is for temps to climb up where they should be this time of year, 'bout time!

How are things your way? A toe booboo, oh noes, kitty step on you? 😁

It’s been a crazy spring this year, no doubt. You haven’t warmed up yet and we’ve been chilly, sweating, chilly, sweating. We’re sweating this week.

I hope your forecast is correct. Way past time for it.

Things are pretty good here, other than too hot. Had a great weekend at the museum and it felt good to be busy at last.

I was answering Kathy. Booboo toe is from you stepping on it as we squeezed through the Canteen door at the same time. LOL

Hey there, Kathy.

The day went well enough but yes, it IS too hot. I needed to head into town this afternoon and really didn’t want to step through the door.

I had to giggle at 70 being hot to you. LOL That is perfect weather down here.

WOOHOO on a momma bringing her ducklings to meet you! I wonder how many others will follow suit this year.

Hope Cuts through Storms
Read: Psalm 107:23–32

He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. Psalm 107:29

In the spring of 2021, several storm-chasers recorded videos and took photos of a rainbow next to a tornado in Texas. In one video, long stalks of wheat in a field bent under the power of the whirling winds. A brilliant rainbow cut across the gray skyline and arched toward the twister. Bystanders in another video stood on the side of the road and watched the symbol of hope standing firm beside the twisting funnel-shaped cloud.

In Psalm 107, the psalmist offers hope and encourages us to turn to God during difficult times. He describes some who were in the middle of a storm, “at their wits’ end” (v. 27). “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress” (v. 28).

God understands His children will sometimes struggle to feel hopeful when life feels like a storm. We need reminders of His faithfulness, especially when the horizon looks dark and tumultuous.

Whether our storms come as substantial obstacles in our lives, as emotional turmoil, or as mental stress, God can still our storms “to a whisper” and guide us to a place of refuge (vv. 29–30). Though we may not experience relief in our preferred way or time, we can trust God to keep the promises He’s given in Scripture. His enduring hope will cut through any storm.Xochitl Dixon

When have you struggled to feel hopeful during a storm in your life? How has God given you reminders of His promises through Scripture and His people when you needed a burst of hope?

Loving God, thank You for being my hope-giver no matter what’s going on in my life.

Bible in a year: 2 Chronicles 13–14; John 12:1–26
