WASHIR, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have begun a campaign to eradicate poppy cultivation, aiming to wipe out the country’s massive production of opium and heroin, even as farmers fear their livelihoods will be ruined at a time of growing poverty.

...

During their first time in power in the late 1990s, the Taliban also banned poppy cultivation and with a fierce campaign of destroying croplands nearly eradicated production within two years, according to the United Nations.

However, after the U.S.-led invasion that ousted the Taliban in 2001, many farmers returned to growing poppies.

Over the next nearly 20 years, Washington spent more than $8 billion trying to eradicate Afghan poppy production. Instead, it only steadily increased: In 2002, around 75,000 hectares were planted with poppies, producing some 3,400 tons of opium. Last year, production was double that.

This is an action I can agree with.

Who wants their citizens all drugged up? Once you use it, it seems you keep using it, or substitute other mind altering drugs.

What good is it to have opium dens in every house?

How do you eat opium?

Funny how we never had the balls to do that. It is almost like some government agency was tied up in the opium/heroin drug industry...

One more reason to believe that the War on Drugs was never a war at all.

The best our elites could do is eliminate competition and funnel all drugs through one cartel or the other. Less violence in the streets and more deaths in private.

” even as farmers fear their livelihoods will be ruined at a time of growing poverty.”

Seriously? The AP wants us to feel sorry for opium farmers? Sick b@st@rds.

Those farmers should all be executed.

That's funny.

Hilarious is how many US troops were ordered to guard poppy fields.

From the article:

“Over the next nearly 20 years, Washington spent more than $8 billion trying to eradicate Afghan poppy production. Instead, it only steadily increased: In 2002, around 75,000 hectares were planted with poppies, producing some 3,400 tons of opium. Last year, production was double that.”

And that, my FRiends, is exactly how every program in our government works.

For the life of me, I never understood why our military never ‘salted’ poppy fields. Well, maybe I understood, I just didn’t want to admit that the establishment profits from the drug trade. Just look at our southern border right now.

About 10 years ago, I was watching a documentary on Military History Channel about us in Afghanistan. Near the end they were talking to someone in the Air Force, and I swear I heard him say something to the effect of “we don’t do anything about it because the country needs income” or something.

Never saw it again.

It was Bush who stopped the destruction of the poppy fields. He was afraid it would harm their economy!
