Buenos Aires Bans Woke Spanish in Schools

In yet another blow to the radical left’s attempts to mangle the language of Cervantes, the capital of one of South America’s largest countries has said schools can no longer teach bastardized, woke Spanish.

Buenos Aires City Hall recently announced it was banning the use of so-called inclusive Spanish in the city’s schools. According to the city’s mayor, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, using e, x, and @, in written Spanish will no longer be acceptable.

“Teachers have to respect the rules of the Spanish language because children have to master the language as it is,” said Larreta, as reported by the Buenos Aires Times.

Woke Spanish, much like its English cousin, is mostly relegated to activists and universities. Use of the e, x, and @ are officially recognized in some niches of Argentine academia, like the Social Sciences Faculty at the University of Buenos Aires.

A guide to inclusive Spanish argues that people should use words that don’t exist like “todxs” or “amigues” to avoid gender entirely.

This debate on whether to completely de-gender Spanish highlights one major difference between the war on language in America and Argentina.

Every single word in Spanish is gendered, meaning even things like tables (las mesas) and pencils (los lapices) have a grammatical gender attached to them. To the radical left, that means the entire language must be changed.

There is something mind-boggling about the scope of the radical left’s attempt to alter Spanish. Americans are still reeling from repeated attempts to make “Latinx” a thing. But in Argentina, every single word and grammatical structure is under attack.

In the U.S., we cringe when someone says “birthing person” or “person who menstruates” instead of “woman,” but thankfully, it’s just one word. …

A very long time ago I needed to learn Persian (Farsi/Dari). Besides not having genders for nouns, it doesn’t have them for pronouns either. If the idiots demanding language changes for ‘equality’ are right, then the countries that speak Farsi should be ahead of the curve when it comes to equity of the sexes.

Let’s see, those countries would be Iran and Afghanistan.

So many countries in Latin America seem to go to extremes. Not just the 1970’s style Democrats represent labor and Republicans management.

It’s like a fascist and a communist trying to drive a car down there, each one wrenching the steering wheel in different directions.

Cuba was once one of the wealthiest countries in the world, then in immoderation they went communist.

Argentina can’t figure out if they want to be communist or fascist, even though they rivaled the United States in wealth per capita 120 years ago.

Chile was up and coming, now they decided that communism will be a great thing.

My Spanish professor was from Venezuela, showed us beautiful middle class neighborhoods and resort beaches. Then they just had to have communists in charge and they’ve resorted to eating stray dogs.

Such potential for a beautiful culture all to be thrown to waste for nothing. I hope Brazil holds.

Yep, they’ve had some piss-poor leadership over the past several decades and the people don’t much seem to care.

They do take pride in their Castilian Spanish, though. I went down there for work a few times in the late 90s (Buenos Aires and Bahia Blanca) and I found it to be a charming place in spite of their socialistic leanings at the time.

They speak Castilian Spanish with a slight Italian accent and it sounds downright musical.

I’m glad to see they’re at least taking steps to protect that.

“They speak Castilian Spanish “

One of my best friends is from Valencia..and has many Basque relatives. Its been a long time since someone mentions “castilian Spanish” on FR. When he was here in L.A., he told me the mexicans use of Spanish sounded 3rd world and straight from the gutter.

Spanish is a gendered language, where every noun has a gender. There are only two genders in the language and every noun must be one or the other (which in the past has led to jokes about “Why is the table female?” and the like.) What they’re referring to in the article is the wokist introduction of e, x or @ to try to introduce new genders into the language. Much like we have had ‘Latinx’ pushed on us in American English, the wokists are using inserted x, e and @ characters to indicate alternate genders.

Expanding on what’s already in the article: The noun ‘friend’ in Spanish is ‘amigo’ for a male friend but it’s ‘amiga’ for a female friend. The generic when not referring to a specific person is still ‘amigo’. The wokists want to change the language so that the word has no gender in generic usage (or can be used for ‘altergender’ people) so it would be ‘amigues’.

They also cite ‘todos’ - which is ‘all’ (as in ‘y’all’) in Spanish. If a male group, it’s ‘todos.’ An all female group is ‘todas.’ The wokesters want it replaced by ‘todxs’ for the reasons stated above.

Additionally - a not-very-good rule of thumb for Spanish is that if the noun ends in ‘o,’’os’ or ‘on,’ it’s male. If it ends in ‘a,’ ‘er,’ ‘re,’ etc., it’s female. Lots of exceptions. More here:

https://www.thoughtco.com/words-that-break-the-gender-rule-3078133

https://study.com/academy/lesson/masculine-feminine-in-spanish.html

What the wokesters want to do is replace or supplement the o-endings or a-endings with another character.

Yes I:m quite familiar with Spanish, but the article is very misleading when it said...

“According to the city’s mayor, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, using e, x, and @, in written Spanish will no longer be acceptable.

Makes it sounds like he wants to ban the use of e and x totally. Very poorly written.

They mean “woke” usage to work with the gender issue thing. The article explains it.
