Police had their weapons drawn as they ordered Nick Wright and his 13-year-old daughter to put their hands on the hood of the car they had rented less than an hour earlier.

“I couldn’t see my daughter for most of the situation, so I felt completely helpless,” Wright said. “I was being detained with my fingers locked behind my head and police telling me to shut up. It was surreal.”

Wright and his daughter were on vacation and had just landed at Savannah airport. They’d rented the car about 30 minutes before officers stopped them.

WHY would anybody rent from Hertz??? One woman was arrested for four times over the car she legally rented and the fourth arrest resulted in a miscarriage. This company should be shut down and executives see prison.

people rent from Hertz if they didn’t know that Hertz cars are pulled over by police. I had not heard about Hertz cars being targeted. Is this common knowledge?

Another man, Julius Burnside, was arrested and spent seven months in jail before a Georgia court reviewed the evidence and ruled that Burnside had, in fact, paid for his rental. The case was ultimately overturned.

Yeah, I’ll be renting from Hertz...never (as if there were any chance of that in the first place).

Hertz cars aren’t targeted, cars with plate numbers having been reported stolen get pulled over. Cops are unlikely to know its a Hertz car.

Totally agree. One or two incidents like this can be explained away by computer glitches. But this is happening over and over again. It’s depraved indifference on the part of Hertz executives.

“One woman was arrested for four times over the car she legally rented”

Upon the first arrest she should have done what the cops advised the man in this report - do not continue to drive the car - make Hertz bring you another car. That’s what I would have done; not continue to drive what had been reported as a stolen, innocent or not.

There have been many stories and even a lawsuit over Hertz falsly reporting their cars to the police as stolen then never removing the stolen vehicle report when the vehicle is later found in their system.

BC (before covid) I traveled a lot for business and always used Hertz. The had the most generous rewards program that I used for all my personal travel. The “Gold Choice” and “Presidential Circle” aisle options were great.

No more alas. Now the company prefers National. I’ve had 4 rentals, 3 for 1 week and 1 for 3 weeks and still need 3 more rentals before I get a single free day.

The Savannah airport is really convenient. It’s easy to get in and out. Not much traffic. Lots of parking.

If you vacation in Savannah, be sure to have lunch at Huey’s on River St. Start with an order of beignets and a Bloody Mary. It’s legal to carry an open container on River St as you shop at the tourist traps.

Hindsight is 20/20. She didn’t know what to do. All she knew was she was innocent. Hertz is using the police for illegal arrests and nobody is holding the accountable.

It’s becoming more common. I told my husband about another recent story like this, and he told me that he’s heard the same complaint from several people that he works with. Don’t rent with Hertz. They are being sloppy on their bookkeeping. They are reporting cars as stolen that they have actually rented out. Be forewarned. My husband’s company uses National now.

Part of the issue here is heavy-handed police tactics. If the officer did not make this guy and his daughter get out of the car and put their hands on the hood like they were being arrested, this would be a non-story. Hertz can be annoying but I sympathize with them on this issue. If someone does not return a car and a couple weeks go by, why shouldn’t they report the car stolen? But if Hertz is going to report cars stolen, they need to make sure they aren’t re-renting cars reported stolen to new customers.
