I think we tried ‘divorce’ once. It was pretty bloody.
The problem is not blue state vs red state its urban vs rural with suburban soccer mom “I-just-want-to-be-known-as-nice!” thrown in just to imbalance things.
So, a geographical split will only punish the rural in the blue states.
The War Between The States was not about divorce.
It was about getting the abusive spouse to mend his ways.
We now know that was a mistake.
Never negotiate with fascists.
Sadly there is no easy solution to two large groups of people in one country hating and despising each other’s continued existence.
Keeping the two separated works to some extent: N. and South Korea, N. and South Vietnam, Pakistan and India and Serbs and Croatians. All Shiite and Sunni Muslims in ongoing deadly conflicts.
Apart there is stalemate. Together there is the clash of war.
It never ended. We’ve been living under an Armistice ever since.
We went into that “divorce” proceedings in 1861, with no clear idea as to what the outcome should have been. Had the discussion been undertaken to find a more amicable resolution, then perhaps the Confederate States would have formed a more cohesive nation, and not just a coalition of malcontents.
Shoot first, ask questions later.
Any such separation today, should be on the lines of congressional districts, not state borders, allowing districts WITHIN a state to become breakaway republics, but the end result would be sometimes widely separated “blue” enclaves within a near contiguous “red” nation spanning much of the current boundaries.
A one-time choice would be offered to those with “blue” preferences to emigrate from the “red” district to an enclave that was more to their liking, and likewise the “red” citizens would be allowed to leave “blue” districts.
But thereafter, there can be no “do-overs”, and a very strict border control would be imposed between the “blue” enclaves, and the larger “red” district. Trade would still be authorized, but only by negotiated treaty.
Ah yes... because we had to preserve “the Union”... As if it were some blessed organization we must bow to above all else... the actual reason for the war was States rights.
The states were promised that if things did not work out they would be able to dissolve their membership in the union. Apparently that was a lie.
Many people in the South were also abolitionists. They were fighting against the federal government forcing States to do something not originally planned in the Constitution.

Yea, the winners have truly F’d up this country.
Simply because one half didn’t agree. That doesn’t have to be the case.
