Untangling DeSantis-Disney legal dispute could take years

If they go to court, Disney and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ hand-picked oversight board might be in for a multimillion-dollar legal slugfest that could last years.

On one side, the Reedy Creek Improvement District is hiring four law firms, including a politically connected conservative Washington, D.C., firm that counts U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton as alumni.

On the other, Disney is a nearly $180 billion corporation with a top lawyer who earned about $15.2 million in compensation in 2022, according to a recent financial filing.

Legal bills would pile up in a protracted court fight, and the district could draw on the tax dollars Disney pays to Reedy Creek to compensate its lawyers, said Jacob Schumer, a Central Florida local government tax attorney.

“Reedy Creek is going to be spending Disney’s own money fighting Disney,” Schumer said. “If they go all the way with all the agreements, it will certainly cross seven figures, eight figures.”

Lately I have been trying to find some viable information on how the Florida government's revocation of the Reedy Creek Districts special status is progressing. To date, the signal to noise ratio has been pretty low, so I post this here in order to gain a better understanding of how this is progressing.

Lots of self-destructive negativism on this forum lately, which we don't need here. Constructive and informed comments welcome; nay-sayers, conspiracy nuts and other assorted dreck are not.

Everone, everywhere at this point should take every opportunity to wreck Disney and disassociate from them altogether - financially and otherwise. They have become enemies of what’s good.

We’re in a banana republic now - that the left wanted - so just keep sending state resources and authorities after them... whether they deserve it or not.

How convenient for DeSantis, doesn’t have to worry about Disney making noises about moving out of state, yet still gets to claim he stood up to Disney.

I sure wish Trump had that kind of luck!

Good. Disney isn't just trash, they're actively anti-American at this point.

I have no problem with that.

Disney could just cut their losses and withdraw altogether from Florida. Sounds radical, but it might be in everybody’s interests for the total divorce to proceed. The current management at Disney no longer cares that Disney began with a mouse. They have built it into a gigantic T. Rex, only to find that that transformation is not nearly as amusing as it sounded inside their own heads.

Disney has taken a very abrupt left turn in the past decade, and some 95% of their woes with the State of Florida are self-induced. Wokeism is a mental disorder, and confers no lasting social benefit.

I remember when Florida was making the deal with Disney. It seemed the state gave away every right imaginable, including the ability, if Disney wanted, to build a nuclear reactor to power their facility. The Orlando area was, at the time, a bunch of orange groves. It was known for a row of titty bars on Orange Avenue and that was it. If you got off the interstate, there was a truck stop and beyond that just mile after mile of empty secondary roads. Now, I’m pretty sure if Disney left it wouldn’t matter much. But they won’t leave even if they lose bigtime.

How many billions of dollars in property and other assets does Disney have invested in Florida?

I find it hard to believe they would take their ball and go home , so to speak, because of Ron DeSantis, and Disney disliking the parental rights law, and Disney being unhappy about their special status changing.

It would definitely be a strong political statement, but would a major company really do all of that, just to prove that they are liberal?

Liberalism, and in particular, wokeism is a mental disorder. Don't expect rationality from the board.

“If the agreement violates rules that a contract cannot stand long after the deaths of everyone alive, it remains in effect until “21 years after the death of the last survivor of descendants of King Charles III, king of England living as of the date of this declaration.”

This is the plastic rat’s announced defense to Florida’s initiative to level the playing field for other tourist traps?

Disney’s self dealing is reaching new depths. The Florida legislature should take appropriate action to deal with this cancer.

Exactly. Let no opportunity to trash DeSantis pass you by.

I don’t have a favorite in this race. Yet.

DeSantis Derangement Syndrome. The fight against Disney and wokeness is important. We don’t need infighting to sabotage it. Blind loyalty to Trump is nice and all but you know maybe conservatives should also pay a little attention to....doing conservative things like fighting wokeness? Thats a little bit more important to the cause than the personal success of any one man. Or if Trump supporters can’t bring themselves to do that maybe actually start attacking the Democrats that are literally trying to imprison Trump right now as vigorously as they are attacking fellow conservatives...just a thought.

Shut them down and it will be over in five minutes. Hit them where it hurts. It is irresponsible to allow a large private agency to operate without appropriate supervision. Once all issue are ironed out to Gov. Desantis satisfaction they can return to business as usual. Also inform them they will be paying taxes as if there was no shut down. Time to play dirty like democrats do. Also consider criminal charges against all involved in defrauding the people of Florid out of their rightful powers of enforcement

Disney should pack up and go to some democrat crime ridden hellhole city - they’d fit in better. Maybe Chicago’s South Side?
