H&R Block Shared Taxpayer Data With Meta: Lawmakers

A group of congressional Democrats reported Wednesday that three large tax preparation firms — H&R Block, TaxAct and Tax Slayer — sent “extraordinarily sensitive” information on tens of millions of taxpayers to Facebook parent company Meta over the course of at least two years.

Their report urges federal agencies to investigate and potentially go to court over the wealth of information that the three company shared with the social media giant.

In a letter to the heads of the IRS, the Justice Department, the Federal Trade Commission and the IRS watchdog, seven lawmakers say their findings “reveal a shocking breach of taxpayer privacy by tax prep companies and by Big Tech firms.”

Their report said highly personal and financial information about sources of taxpayers' income, tax deductions and exemptions was made accessible to Meta as taxpayers used the tax software to prepare their taxes.

“ Their report said highly personal and financial information about sources of taxpayers’ income…”

I bet all the FBI, CIA, NSA, etc employees who used these services are unhappy.

H&R Block, what a joke. We had them prepare our tax returns for a couple decades until I played the futures and lost. I went to my H&R Block tax prep lady at Sears like I had done for years. She had never worked with anyone that lost in futures, called her head office and was told to refuse me. They claimed they did not know how to do it. This was in the mid 90’s.

I got tax software, followed instructions, called the IRS for a special form, and did it myself. Been doing it myself ever since.

None of this offensive privacy violation, data-mining or sale-of-information would be possivle if the income tax were replaces with a national retail sales tax. It’s almost as if the sadists in Congress and at the IRS want this sort of thing to happen. Oh, and if your cinfidential tax info is hacked or just plain leaked, sorry, not sorry!

Wife’s co worker withdrew $10,000 from her stock account, stock she had bought with already taxed money, she filed the whole amount as ordinary income and paid income tax on it.

When we tried to explain to her, she got a little huffy and said that her brother-in-law who was a CPA filed it for her and “he knows what he’s doing”.

Oh well, it’s her money to piss away, if that’s what she wants to do with it.

The penalty should be having H&R Block and Meta/Google pay everyone’s taxes for 3 years.
