The labor situation in the U.S. auto industry is escalating rapidly, with potential far-reaching consequences
Citizen Watch Report ^

Posted on 09/19/2023 9:47:42 AM PDT by davikkm

Threat of Expanded Strike: United Auto Workers (UAW) have issued a threat to expand their ongoing strike, which initially involved workers at Ford, Stellantis, and GM. Currently, around 13,000 out of 144,000 UAW workers are already on strike, but the situation is becoming increasingly volatile.

Historic Strike: Notably, this marks the first time in history that all three major U.S. automakers are simultaneously facing strikes. Such widespread labor unrest is a cause for significant concern.

Staggering Daily Costs: The financial impact of a potential expanded strike is staggering. A strike involving the entire UAW workforce could cost U.S. automakers nearly $600 million per day. This poses a severe financial burden on the industry, especially given the economic challenges already faced.

Record-Loss of Work Days: The broader picture reveals that August saw a total of 4.1 million workdays lost due to various strikes and lockdowns, marking the highest level since 2000. Remarkably, this figure excludes the impact of UAW strikes.

Worsening Outlook: Looking ahead, the situation is expected to worsen in September. The urgency for a solution to these labor disputes is apparent, as the ongoing strikes are already having a profound impact on the automotive sector and the broader economy.

The need for resolution and stability in the labor market is increasingly critical to prevent further economic disruptions.

Oil prices have risen nearly 30% in the last 8 months, so we won’t be able to afford gas anyway - so it all works out.

A pox on all their houses. The UAW is one of the largest contributors to the Democrat party. Everytime you buy a union built product from one of the Big 3, you’re helping pay for a Democrat political campaign; an abortion; a corrupt Democrat Judge.

Think before you buy!

Maybe if they voted smarter the UAW workers would not be facing this inflationary crisis in their earnings. They can tank Der Biden and his Democrat buddies for this problem.

Another Biden manufactured screw job of US workers

Early in the Biden Administration, a spokesperson said the quite part aloud and revealed the core truth of the Biden regime. When asked if they were worried about how their energy policies were driving US inflation she said, “The American people are going to have, you know, to learn to consume less”.

The US People need to accept a difficult to believe fact. The Biden Administration is at war with you. They think Americans consume too much of the world’s resources. They think the US has been a global bully that must be reduced to be more like the “good” nations in the world. They think Americans have governed themselves irresponsibly for too long and need to be brought under greater control by their “betters” in the political/media class. The Biden people are just lying to you by blaming everyone else for the negative results of the Biden Administration’s policies on working class Americans. They know you will not support their agenda with your votes in 2024 if they told you these truths.

The longest period of economic progress for average citizens worldwide was 1950 to 1973. From 1973 to 1983 were some of the worst times for the post-World War Two working class. They suffered under the burdens of a stagnant job market, slow wage growth and a rapid continuous rise in inflation. Why? Because in 1973 OPEC imposed an oil embargo, which they followed up again later in the 1970s.

The Biden Administration replicated that same economic impact with their domestic energy policy as soon as they took office. Their thinking was “the US consumes too much fossil fuels, they need to be forced to use renewable energy sources in the name of “saving the planet””. The Biden team knows they cannot do that if fossil fuels remain the cheaper, more efficient, source of power. The Biden plan is to use US Government regulatory powers to create a supply side constriction in US domestic production. That would create cost push inflation to force fossil fuel prices much higher worldwide. The unintended consequence of this foolish act was to create a rapid, sustained, increase in inflation across the board for US Consumers. Their theory is this would make renewable energy sources and electric vehicles more cost competitive. Combined with other US Government regulatory actions that will force Americans to consume less energy as well as buy electric vehicles. The bulk of US voters do not support this agenda so they knew they would have to lie about it. The result is the same old propaganda tactics Joe Biden has used since he came to DC in 1972. Blame everyone else for the consequences of his actions.

Hard to be sympathetic when the CEOs get much higher raises percentage-wise than the workers.

Any company doing stock buy-backs doesn’t deserve much credence when pleading poverty.

Inflation and strikes go together like a horse and carriage.

Then when the employers capitulate the prices of more stuff goes up so workers need to strike more to pay for it....

Inflation is like a wildfire—with everybody trying to pour more gasoline on it.

“force Americans to consume less energy as well as buy electric vehicles.” The strike will lead to higher prices on new vehicles due to a drop in the supply. Buyers will move to used vehicles increasing demand on them. Which will raise prices on used cars. Add in the obama admin’s war on oil and gas, it is going to get interesting very soon.

UAW singlehandedly, drove US car manufacturers to bankruptcy in 2009. The US automakers employ only 1/10 of workers relative to late 70ties.
They UAW are still, even now, making more than in the transplant factories.

The UAW demands may administer the final blow to the US auto industry.

Wave the smoke away and the core of this Ford taking bribe money from Joey to try to force electric vehicles on us.
Even the greedy UAW members can see that EVs would eventually kill the privately owned transportation vehicles and end their jobs.
Not making patriots out of thugs but they are on the right side here even if it is for less than patriotic reasons.

I feel as sorry for the UAW strikers as I do for the Hollywood writer strikers.

That would be an even nada...

“Maybe if they voted smarter the UAW workers would not be facing this inflationary crisis in their earnings.”

Inflation or no inflation, unions exist solely as a shakedown operation: They will shakedown employers no matter what the excuse. And the irony is that union workers are, from what I’ve seen and experienced, not as good as non-union workers.

That has been my experience as well.

2nd law of thermodynamics applies to social as well as physical systems

The natural state is high entropy and low energy. Unions increased the entropy

There are huge numbers of vehicles built by Americans in America. Vehicles of Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, VW, Hyundai, Kia and Volvo are now built by American autoworkers.

There are plenty of vehicle choices for Americans to buy BUILT BY AMERICAN WORKERS among those eight companies.

The “big three” are dinosaurs.

This would not be the entire UAW. There are UAW locals that manufacture military hardware. Many UAW locals in the health industry here in Michigan.
