Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate will occur in the shadow of former President Ronald Reagan — making the setting a vivid reminder of how today’s Republicans have in a lot of ways abandoned his legacy. Reagan, president from 1981 to 1989, redefined not only the mission of his party, but the mission of the federal government.
Taxes were cut dramatically. The military was strengthened. The president talked tough and won the Cold War. The role of government as an economic safety net began to erode. Social issues such as abortion rights became prominent federal issues. Today, former President Donald Trump, the current 2024 GOP front runner, and his no-compromise allies dominate the party as they promote limited government and social issues.

I don’t think that will help the losers in their debate

The letter after the name means jack anymore.
The only reason political parties still exist is to give voters the illusion of choice.
A pol is either loyal to our former republic or to Deep State.
Reagan was not Deep State.
The people now running his library, the people on that stage are Deep State.
nearly everyone always forgets that it was Reagan that gave the illegals the original amnesty.
Yes
I’m sure the Sacramento Bee was very pro Reagan back in the day, give me strength.
One unfortunate act in an era of his working against the grain to establish a semblance of conservatism preceded and followed by RINO times.
The Pubbies never liked Reagan just like they didn’t like Goldwater and Trump.
And most Republicans are neither these days.
oh I agree, but was just pointing out that even Reagan wouldn’t measure up to Reagan since many don’t remember what he actually did at this point.
The Republican Party has principles?
Reagan also supported abortion in cases of rape, incest and the protect the life of the mother.
Which would put him to the left of many conservatives today which want abortion outlawed in virtually all cases.
Debate-what will Trump be doing? We’ve heard his speeches and interviews. If it’s more of the same the debate will get more viewers which the MSM will run with. The debate will get silly. Count on it.
The Party never had Reagan’s principles, they hated Reagan as well.
RINOs at the Library is bad. But Nancy hosted Teddy Kennedy there after RWR died. Maybe around 2008. I gave him a “certain” salute as he turned the corner from Madera Rd. on to Presidential.
Disgusting that she would have that murdering pig there.
And Barry Goldwater was no absolutist on abortion either.

Yup 💯
“Reagan also supported abortion in cases of rape, incest and the protect the life of the mother.
Which would put him to the left of many conservatives today which want abortion outlawed in virtually all cases.”
a lot more than that. He really got the abortion ball rolling by legalizing it in California in 1967
What principles, specifically, are those?
And, remember, we are living in a very different time, under circumstances that call for decisive action, not for fealty to a long-dead politician's ideas about a different time and place.
