The troops would cover a variety of support roles, such as additional medical support or explosive ordnance support, such as providing additional security at gate crossings, one of the officials said.
They would not be sent to Israel.
Hmmm, that’s about the size of a Marine MEU... Maybe the Gaza-Egypt border?
That’s what I would guess. They will go to the Egyptian-Gaza border to help with relief. Egypt says it won’t open the gate without guarantees Israel won’t bomb it. If US troops are there, Israel won’t bomb it so it provides guarantees to Egypt. Egypt has also deployed troops to contain any attempt at mass exodus from Gaza into Egypt. There is a convoy of food and medicine waiting to get in, Israel wants all cargo going into Gaza from Egypt inspected for weapons. There are foreign nationals waiting to get out. Israel said it is ready to turn the water back on to Southern Gaza. So I agree this is probably about getting all parties to agree to let humanitarian relief in and giving all parties the assurances they need to come to agreement.
There had been US troops stationed in the Sinai in the past. I saw them there. But that was decades ago. A google search says less than 200 are there now.
Saw today on here somewhere that there is an MEU on its way to the eastern med with the Bataan Group
