I Can’t Overstate How Dire This Is | Bret Weinstein
YouTube ^ | Dec 10, 2023

Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report" talks to Bret Weinstein about the decline of enlightenment liberalism;

whether tribalism is Western civilization’s future;

why Western civilization has been reversing course on racial equality;

the missteps of the New Atheists and the challenge of reconciling past wisdom with modern problems;

the societal consequences of rapid progressivism;

the arbitrary nature and pointlessness of a lot of our education;

the unintended impacts of discarding established norms;

the human tendency to focus on immediate problems while avoiding thoughtful analysis to avoid unintended chaos;

the need for a balanced approach that respects both conservative and progressive instincts in societal evolution;

Elon Musk's unexpected role in the Twitter free speech battle; his personal meeting with Musk and Musk subsequently blocking him;

the challenges faced by individuals who have strengths like courage and insight but who struggle to collaborate effectively; and much more.

Probably the most profound and comprehensive discussion I’ve heard in the last three decades.

Yeah, it was that good …

Weinstein thinks the Enlightenment was a good thing, and that although “rapid” progressivism may cause problems, progressivism AS SUCH holds promise for the human race. He thinks tribalism is bad, and equality is a necessity, perhaps “whatever it takes”.

If you agree with those things, that’s up to you - but you shouldn’t call yourself a conservative, because all of those things are anathema to conservativism.

Trying to square that circle is why American, and Western European, conservatism cruises from failure to failure - and it’s why our society is near collapse.

Yeah, I do believe the Enlightenment was a good thing… but it’s more complicated than I can post here …

Bret & wife Heather do a weekly podcast which is the DarkHorse podcast. Lots of good discussion. They are Libs, but the rare kind that are reasonable & discuss issues. Both are very smart & interesting. DarkHorse has become one of my favorite podcasts. The podcast is also on Rumble.

Thanks - if all liberals were like Bret, we could be good neighbors

I think the crux of Bret’s discussion is, he is seeking the truth, wherever that leads. But he is DEEPLY concerned that the CRT template (oppressed/oppressor) view of the world is leading to a type of tribalism that will tear the world apart.

He’s already experienced the leftist ‘close minded’ cult like oppression from his intellectual pursuits at the academic level and would rather live in a more conservative world that at least, is open to new discoveries and thoughts. He recognizes Western Civilization is not perfect, but, through meritocracy, it is tolerant enough to allow truth to float to the top.

Leftism today, has adopted a philosophy that is totally dedicated to deconstructing all rules and boundaries, and will not tolerate anyone who stands in the way of this goal or even asks the question are we better today as a society than we were 60 years ago. And if we’re not, what did we change that we might want to reconsider. The Left is not even open to allowing that question to be asked.

Rapid progressivism hates Enlightenment Liberalism with a white hot passion. They’re doing everything they can to cover it up, smear it, and besmirch it.

“If you agree with those things, that’s up to you - but you shouldn’t call yourself a conservative”

Enlightenment Liberals are what the Founding Fathers were. Everything flows from the fountain of truth.

I thought everyone knew that. I knew that 20 years before I was interested in politics.
Basic American history.

Chesterton’s Fence was a good point. “Defund the police” “Open borders.” Tear the word apart indeed.

Above is a sermon my pastor gave back in 2021 about CRT. At the 29 minute mark he goes into the history of it. (He was born in Germany). He (and I) love history. CRT obviously does not fit into a biblical world view.

I had to look that one up:

Chesterton's Fence is a simple rule of thumb that suggests that you should never destroy a fence, change a rule, or do away with a tradition until you understand why it's there in the first place. The principle assumes that fences have a purpose, were carefully planned, and cost time and money to erect.

to his credit, although an atheist, he sees lots of wisdom in traditional values. As a Christian, I would argue, those Judeo Christian values are how God intended man to prosper, or experience His common Graces; best summarized in the book of Proverbs and elsewhere - ie; Apostle Paul’s remark that ‘the hard working farmer deserves the first fruits’ - a clear recognition that ‘meritocracy’ is the intended means by which man prospers.

I’ll check that out. The reason I left my former church was after the George Floyd incident, I had a discussion with the pastor, and he saw nothing wrong with CRT and Social Justice - I and 30% of the church left after he started preaching that stuff.
