Emergent BioSolutions was awarded a 5-year, $235.8 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense to supply the anthrax vaccine BioThrax to the various branches of the military.
Under the terms of the deal, Emergent is guaranteed a purchase minimum of $20.1 million, with future orders estimated to be worth at least $20 million for each following year. Beyond the initial 5-year term, the contract has a 5-year option that could extend the deal to 2033.
In all, the procurement pact could be worth up to $235.8 million, the company said in a Jan. 11 release.
“Emergent is proud to continue supporting and preparing our nation’s service members who have a high risk of exposure to anthrax bacteria by supplying BioThrax vaccine,” Paul Williams, senior vice president, products head at Emergent, said in the release.
Founded in 1998, Emergent has been a long-time supplier of anthrax countermeasures to the U.S. government. Its procurement deals have included a CDC contract worth up to $911 million in 2016, and a $258 million contract modification from the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response in 2020.
During the pandemic, the drug manufacturer faced high-profile setbacks in its efforts to help make COVID-19 vaccines.
Emergent’s former chief executive, Robert Kramer, who played a key role in the company’s growth, resigned in July. He was replaced on an interim basis by Haywood Miller, the managing director of Berkeley Research Group.
Emergent Snares sounds like a great name for a drum company.

I had to receive anthrax vaccine in order to travel to Korea. I also had to get smallpox and a few other vaccines. Fun times.
What a waste over something that is virtually no threat to our military. I retired just as the push to get everyone inoculated was in its final phase, so I barely avoided it.

No thanks. They gave us a supply of Ciprofloxacin when there was a threat. You don’t usually feel too great after taking it, but I’d rather that than a shot. I’ll just keep the pills safe until I need them.

Amazing to think the “Anthrax letters” were 23 years ago.
Wasn’t that part of the plan to keep Tom Daschle off the Dem Presidential ballot? Less invasive than the method chosen to keep JFK Jr. off the New York Senate ballot in 2000.
(Note: spellcheck suggested schlep as the correct spelling for Daschle). I’d have guessed schmuck, as in Tom da Schmuck.
Boy, that’s really going back. Letter targets were Daschele and Patrick Leahy as well as various media outfits.
What I recall was the botched FBI investigation. The leaks smearing Steven Hatfill.
Then hounding Bruce Ivins to suicide, and Mueller declaring him guilty.
People who think the rot in the FBI is something recent, weren’t really paying attention.
The rot was obvious a few years before that when they psyopped Patrick Knowlton (the dude who found Vincent Foster’s dead body).

Something I just stumbled over in the last few days: the guy who “investigated” and cleared Bill Clinton for any wrongdoing on the Marc Rich pardon was none other than James Comey.
