GOP Rep. Green rethinking retirement plans amid urging from Tennessee colleagues

Tennessee Republican Rep. Mark Green has confirmed that he is reconsidering his decision to retire at the end of the current Congress after announcing the move earlier this month.

Green confirmed to The Hill that he is "seriously reconsidering" his plans after Punchbowl News first reported on his retirement. Potentially driving his reconsideration is the urging of his fellow Tennessee lawmakers.

"I am hoping Mark Green will reconsider and get back in TN7. Mark is a solid conservative, and we need him to continue his work on the border," Tennessee GOP Sen. Marsha Blackburn told Punchbowl. Other Republican House members from his delegation have also lent their voices to the effort to convince Green to stay.

Green made his initial retirement announcement in the wake of the House impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Whew! I read “rethinking retirement plans” as thinking about making legislation to change accounts like Roth IRA’s and such.

well...I wouldn’t put it past them.

We really don’t need anymore open seats, though...even in supposedly “safe” districts.

There’s nothing “supposed” about how safe this district is, and the same applies to 95% of the other open GOP seats, regardless of how much the pearl clutchers think that they’re all a bunch of George Santos situations.

If the establishment is begging Green to reconsider, the most likely reason is fear that someone more conservative would win. Green’s not bad, but there’s always room for improvement.

<>Our country–and our Congress–is broken beyond most means of repair.<>

We’ll just keep voting and pretend we are self-governing.

He’s sick of DC. He knows so many Republicans are useless scum.

Very safe. The Dem in this recently redrawn district was once Mayor of Nashville.

She was forced to resign after diddling her body guard and padding his pay. Normally that’s nothing and feckless Governor Bill Lee wasn’t going to do anything to her.

The clincher was she got caught screwing in cemeteries.

She was as horrible as Kamala. A total camera whore. Her entire time was spent at photo ops.

Yeah, she’s a piece of work. Actually she’s a piece of shit and has no chance here. She’d have a marginally better chance in the 5th district but nobody in their right mind is voting for that sow anywhere.

However the new 7th is much farther left (about 10%) than the old 7th. No GOP candidate is going to get 70% anymore like Green, Blackburn, Bryant and Sundquist routinely used to do. The old 7th contained no part of the city of Nashville; now it contains 20-25% — and it’s not a good part either. Green lost it massively in 2022 and that’s not going to change this year.

But since nearly 80% of the voters in the 7th are outside of the sewer of Nashville, it’s still an easy win for any Republican. The margins just aren’t nearly as enormous as they were in 2020 and before, but that’s a necessary impact of the redistricting process which allowed the Republicans to finally get rid of Jim Cooper in CD-5 and pick up that district.

As far as I can tell from the map, it sure does. It contains the areas around Vanderbilt University up through North Nashville, the Tennessee State & Fisk areas and those are about as solid Democrat as any places in the city.

Tennessee CD-7 Demographics & Map

You can zoom in on the map to see more detail for Davidson County vis-a-vis the boundaries of the district.

Geez; we really have become like Texas plagued with Austin and New York state ruled by it's Megacity that Albany bows to. When I saw Friedman's Army Surplus (a mile down from Vanderbilt) was closing after generations the writing was on the wall - the ideological battle for Nashville is over.

The Gulch and all the new high-rise buildings cater to the over-paid uniformly liberal Democrats yuppies who don't care a flying donut about the poor and needy. Between those sorts and the people who vote for whom their pastors say while their tithes go to replace illegal replacements...

Illegal immigrants meant to replace them. I may run for President screwing up sentences like that.

Y'all be good now.
