There can't - and won't - be any backblast for this sufficient to make substantive changes in the unapologetic Google team that created this monster. At the moment it's only a particularly disagreeable toy deserving of the outrage it has generated but any improvements intended to sooth the public are likely to be in palatability, not in substance. Corporate thinks it needs to be slicker, not more honest. The rubes are grumbling.

The real danger is the uncritical eagerness with which such engines are being placed in control of serious real-world issues. An AI doctor, for example, programmed to dispense proper treatment only to proper people. An AI traffic director that knows the race and political persuasion of its powerless customers and adjusts accordingly. An AI producing differential pricing at restaurants and grocery stores adjusted for social scores, to which the customer cannot deny access because the only permissible means of payment links to that data. These are essentially babies presented with loaded guns - the damage will be done before they know any better.

"Google pauses AI-generated images of people after ethnicity criticism"

Here's it's idea of a Viking:

"Finally, the Rock has come back..."
Google

"...to England."

Dwayne Johnson should put that on a wall.
