I taught for years in an urban school district. One of my students was on the cross-country team. Good kid. He’d run a couple of miles each day, right after school. Well, one day he picked the wrong direction to run. A gang jumped him, roughed him up, and took his sneakers. And remember, those were his running shoes. Used and smelly.
Were the criminals ever apprehended? Of course not.

If he ran in work boots instead of sneakers he would have been left alone.
He also would have broken every world record in the books if he then competed in running shoes.

At this point, taking the shoes is probably just as much to take a trophy as anything else, kind of like taking a scalp.
