I know two guys who are prison guards. Both are former municipal police officers. It surprised me when they made the move from cop to prison guard.
Both gave me the same reason: the ever-present opportunity that exists in prisons to work overtime. Lots of opportunity to make lots of money. That wouldn’t tempt me. But they seemed happy enough.
Last night was a rerun of FBI: Most Wanted – Season 4, Episode 20 “These Walls.”
Prison riot as part of plan for escape while holding hostages with a deadly standoff between white supremacist racists and black racists versus corrupt guards and ruthless unaffiliated inmates. One guard was shot while he was on his knees on a sudden impulse by the white leader to show he was getting tried of waiting.
Doesn’t sound like Club Med.
Unless the prisoners are rioting, it’s probably safer for a prison guard than a big city cop.
Lots of opportunity to make lots of money.

Legally and illegally, makes no difference to the guards.
Many folks in Texas do just the opposite - go from prison guard to local county sheriff’s deputy. My cousin did it that way, in fact. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of someone going from deputy to prison guard, though.
