Why is Steve Garvey not in the Hall of Fame? Were his stats just not quite good enough, or was there some other reason?
272 home runs and 2599 hits is a good career but not HOF stats for a first baseman.
Short answer, using today’s stats, his career WAR of 38.0 doesn’t get him into the top 600 players of all time.
But no doubt he was a gamer, a real post-season superman.

Garvey’s statistics are very comparable to Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers’ current first baseman and future Hall of Famer, for the first ten years of their careers. But after that Garvey’s stats are very ordinary while Freeman’s stats have been out of this world.
That being said, there’s no reason for Garvey not to be in the Dodgers’ Ring of Fame.
Because he was a good but not great player. Only great players belong in the HOF.
