Ernst irritated by Cotton’s attempt to leapfrog her in leadership, as politically charged GOP races for top spots begin

Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa is miffed that Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas did not call her or other Republican leaders to notify them of his intentions to run for the third ranking position in GOP leadership, a post she might want to move up to in the scramble for open roles after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced he would give up the top job in November.

To move to the number three job, Cotton would have to leapfrog Ernst and GOP Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia who currently hold the number four and five positions respectively.

“I just wish he would have called me before making that announcement. I know he didn’t give many of us a heads up. So that would have been common courtesy,” Ernst said Tuesday.

The intra-party tensions on display are part of the maneuvering in the politically charged and sensitive leadership races as colleagues who are friends but also competitors seek more power and influence.

Cotton, a conservative security hawk who is not a member of leadership, announced on the Hugh Hewitt program Tuesday that he would seek to become the chair of the Republican Conference.

Ernst is currently chair of the Republican Policy Committee and Capito is vice chair of the Republican Conference.

Golly gee, I wonder why he didn't give you a call.

Conservative Review Liberty scores:

Cotton (AR): 81%

Ernst (IO): 62%

Moore Capito (WV): 43%

Capito said after Ernst. “I mean we do have a lot of time, but people are starting to lay markers down, and I think the voice I bring to the conference is important and it’s important to my state, so I’m interested in staying in leadership.”

She’s a piss-poor senator. So of course she’s interested in staying in leadership. McConnell’s Liberty score, by the way, is 44%. So she’s worse than McConnell.

I’m thinking that means neither Jody Ernst or Shelly Moore Capito get accused much of being conservative national security hawks....

I hear that women drive the same way on the freeway, too. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

Capito needs to be primaried out. It is a travesty that West Virginia are sending such slime like Manchin and Capito.

West “by God” Virginia can do much, much better.

“Boo hoo Joni Ernst…”

Still waiting, still waiting to hear her make someone squeal.

She just squealed.

Perfect example of why the system is rotten: “might want to move up”, meaning, “It’s mine because I’ve paid my dues”. Bullsh!t.

Manchin is gone this year. Republicans will, in May, get to choose Rep Alex Mooney or Gov Jim Justice as a candidate for Senate. The democrats will, of course, nominate at total pizza chit. I prefer Mooney on policy, but sending Jim Justice and his overweight canine “Baby Dog” to the Senate would be hilarious.

In addition, her son is a WV House chairman and is running for governor this year against conservative Morrissey.

Many here particularly the older voters remember Byrd’s lavish pork fondly but not realistically. They also remember that her father was a successful but corrupt GOP governor. Capito’s current Senate seniority puts her close to level of financial influence Byrd had in the Senate. (Maybe she’s there I haven’t checked Senate Seniority recently!) She plays that up, just like Manchin did. As long as the Senate is close in GOP vs Rat numbers she’ll work those angles and play GOP. I vote against her in the primary but in the general it’s typical WV corrupt & somewhat competent (GOP) vs corrupt & crazy (Rat). Her time to fall will come. The problem is she has two sons in the state legislature one running for Gov (in the primary!) waiting in the wings.

Yep. That is why we got Bob Dole running for president and getting hammered. The Republicans are in the old, comfortable, club where they take the scraps off the Democrat table and sit in their leather chairs, sipping their Brandy, and talking about who has been around long enough so they can move into the next higher position.

Oh Lord, do not let Shelly get near or replace anyone. She is nothing but a grifter for 100 years. She would be another Nancy. You do not want her. When you live in WV you know all the politicians personally.

You bet she has been in Washington for at least 25 years and we know how useless she is.

My observation of Joni Ernst is she was quickly assimilated into the McConnell orbit and groomed for leadership after being elected. She is a loyal soldier rewarded for doing their bidding. She is a dependent, not a leader.

I have never felt she is committed to MAGA. Just maintaining the structure of the status quo and the rewards it reaps for the power elite.
