The band in the background on the song included actual Salvation Army musicians who had been seen on the sidewalk when the producer looked down from the studio window. Bob Dylan told him to get them to play for the song.
He said all along it was not about drug “stoning” but only about the uselessness of trying to please everybody since they’ll always criticize you anyway.
Years later after millions of records sold two record company guys were telling him he should change to reflect the current trends for the label. He said: “Gee, if you guys had been around when I started out I could have had a career by now.”
