If I recall accurately, the Iranians were threatening to go after the Soviet embassy also and backed off when the Soviets essentially said they would rain hell on Tehran if their embassy and staff were seized.

I may be remembering that wrong. Been a long time.

It was at the time my belief that the US should have responded in that manner also. My disgust with Carter grew daily through the entire fiasco. And it has never lessened over the years.

Did we sell Israel any in flight fuel tankers? Probably not. It’s not like Iran’s not developing nukes.

Jimmy Carter and Iran. Of all places a book called War In Space had a ranking officer who had been at several White House briefings about military space preparedness who said he was in the room when Carter said “I am sorry to discover today that some of the Iranian diplomatic contacts I trusted up to now were lying to me and did not have the best interests of the US in mind.” The man said “I was really shocked at how naive Carter was even though I had never thought much of him.”
