Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry.

While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951.

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division

Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951

Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H.

G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952

Citation:

Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.

In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

We are getting the walks in, but it still rains at least once a day. Lots of yards flooded.

Cool that your son’s had a little more free time to get together with you. He didn’t have much, if any, for a while. I foresee more fun times at the gun range. :-)

Yes. The museum reopens Friday with the big fun on Saturday. I was up there today to help with a group tour and found out there’ll be more than just the cannons being fired. Devon will be there to give people rides in his British APC again, and I don’t know where it’s flying in from but there’ll be a Black Hawk helicopter parked in the field out front. It’ll be a very fun day for all.

Had a great time today. And the weather is gorgeous, though a bit warm. I’m glad I turned the AC on before I left this morning.
Catching my breath and letting it cool down a little before heading out to put Champ to work. The grass along the driveway reeeeeeeally needs to be cut.
If my back allows, I’ll get the front yard tomorrow and that’ll probably be all I get to do this week due to rain.

Sooo happy for you that the tour went well and that the weather was good. Smart to have that AC going so you could cool down when you got back home. Can’t believe you’re going straight back out to mow. Whoof. You’re tougher than me! LOL!

We were hot again today, but not as hot as yesterday. I think the temp will be nearly 10 degrees cooler tomorrow than it was today.

It was a good day all-’round, though I’m beat from getting up early after not being able to go to sleep for the longest time last night. I’ll be able to sleep tonight! LOL

I did get the driveway done this afternoon and it was slow going. It’s been two weeks since it was mowed and after all the rain last week, the grass was very long and very thick. Took almost two hours this time. It’s a looooong driveway with wide strips of grass on both sides. I hoped to do the front yard tomorrow but I’m not so sure that will happen. Rain is coming this way from AR but maybe it’ll fizzle out before it gets here. They say rain and storms will start coming through late tomorrow night and they’re calling for severe weather Wednesday. *sigh*
It’s Spring!

It’s definitely spring! Mid-spring at that. You’re getting lots of April showers.

Glad you got the driveway mowed, though I’m sure you’re very tired tonight. I’m tired just thinking about all that work. LOL!

We’re definitely getting the April showers! LOL That’s why the grass is so tall and thick. I could do without all the severe weather. I discovered the other day that a large tree came down next to one of the big garages out back last week. It didn’t land on anything, thank goodness. I saw it when I went to the well house to check the water filter. Can’t see it from the house.

I’m VERY tired tonight. It’ll be an early bedtime and there’ll be no trouble going to sleep this time.

Just saw the notice on the Werner Museum FB page about opening this weekend and about the cannon demo....weather permitting. Hope weather permits!

I hear ya on an early night. For some reason, I’m still wiped from my early morning yesterday. What a sissy I’ve become! LOL!

Oh, my goodness, I’m soooo glad that the tree didn’t damage anything. It could have been really bad! EEK

We’re all praying for good weather but as time goes on, the forecast gets less promising. One Nashville station says 30% chance for rain and another says 40%. A couple of days ago, it was lower.

Did you skip your nap this afternoon? LOL Hard to believe you’re tired this early tonight.

Got lucky with that tree. North wind got it. If it had been west wind, the garage would be crunched right now. As it is, it’s lying alongside it now. It isn’t in the way of anything so I’m not worried about it.

No, I had a nap. I just feel like all the blood has been sucked from my body. I’m pretty sure I stayed up too late last night. I forgot to check the clock to see what time it was when I closed the laptop lid. :)

Well, whatever else, I hope some rain doesn’t keep people from showing up to your opening day and the cool cannon BOOMS!

Just went out to sit for a bit. Very balmy and very calm. It was very nice at 75º!

LOL You do stay up mighty late once in a while, getting caught up in a god show.

If it rains, it won’t stop people from showing up. We’ll have a good turnout, no matter what. If something happens and it turns out to be a severe weather day, that’s a different story, but nothing’s been said about that at this point. My hope is that rain will hit in the north or the west part of the state if there’s going to be rain at all. A lot of people are looking forward to Saturday and we’d hate to see it ruined.

Not quite as warm here but the wind finally died down and it doesn’t feel too bad. The wind was out of the west this afternoon and the driveway runs north/south. I was a total chia pet when I got done mowing. LOL I used the air hose from the compressor on myself head-to-toe before I blew the grass off of Champ.

I would love to see a picture of the chia pet. LOL! It’s good to get the work done, though, huh.

I AM going to sleep right now. Well, after brushing the teefs. See ya tomorrow! Sleep well tonight and sleep LATE. I sure intend to! :)

It’s not a pretty sight. LOL It doesn’t feel good either. Itchy! But at least from the road, it looks good. The houses are far enough back that you can’t see how shaggy they are. I might not get to mow any more since I’m still seeing rain on the radar closing in.

Get some good sleep. I’m heading out to do the same. Cat stuff is done and I even hauled off litter scoopings before rain makes it too muddy. Don’t want the car to get stuck.
Sleeping late sounds good for both of us. :-)
Catch ya tomorrow for the quiz.
