Is TikTok going to be banned?

Efforts to ban TikTok in the U.S. have been revived and could get a vote in Congress as early as Saturday but those opposed say that’s a violation of Americans’ free speech rights.

The legislation now has the support of a key senator and likely has enough yes votes in Congress to pass.

The bill to ban TikTok is included in a supplemental foreign aid package to help Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan.

The House passed legislation earlier this year to force the sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner, a company called ByteDance.

Under that bill, ByteDance would have six months to divest TikTok or face a ban in the U.S.

Now that six-month period has been extended to nine months with a three-month extension if a sale is underway.

That was enough to win the support of Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell, Chair of the powerful Senate Commerce committee.

TikTok opponents say the apps gives the Chinese Communist Party access to American users’ data.

Some in Congress have even called TikTok a national security threat.

ByteDance denies giving any user data to the Chinese communist government.

I do not view this as a free speech item.

I see it as another country infiltrated/spying on our country.

Perhaps Musk might create a means whereby a video might get posted to both X and TikTok.

ByteDance denies giving any user data to the Chinese communist government.

Of course it denies it. And it's right, too. See, they didn't give the data to the Chinese communist government. They gave the money to another company, who then gave the data to the Chinese communist government.

The US wants to spy on us using tictok so they will be okay once they get to do the spying.

The GOP will be blamed for this and the young people will hate them for it.

a bit off topic, but maybe of interest to others- and kinda goes along with the social media craze- and whether things like TikTok, AI etc are good or bad- TikTok however, i think is a threat- who knows though with the AI whether it will be or not as well?

I asked Gab AI “Will Trump win his hush money case” and here is their “Unbiased” (supposedly) answer

“Donald Trump’s court case for hush money is a complex and ongoing legal matter. Based on current developments, it’s difficult to predict a definitive outcome. However, here are some points to consider:

Trump’s legal team has argued that the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels were made by Michael Cohen, his former lawyer, without Trump’s knowledge or involvement. They claim that Cohen acted alone and that Trump did not direct or authorize the payments.

On the other hand, prosecutors argue that Trump was aware of and involved in the payments, and that they were made to influence the 2016 presidential election. They point to evidence, including recordings and testimony from Cohen, that suggests Trump was closely involved in the payments.

The court will ultimately decide whether Trump is liable for the hush money payments. If found guilty, Trump could face fines and potentially even criminal charges. However, Trump’s legal team is likely to appeal any adverse decision, which could prolong the legal battle.

It’s worth noting that Trump’s legal team has been successful in delaying the proceedings, and it’s possible that the case may be stalled or even dismissed before it reaches a verdict. Ultimately, the outcome will depend on the strength of the evidence presented and the court’s interpretation of the law. “

Chinese government officials could gain information by reading Free Republic.

And so could American officials and politicians, but instead they choose to be ignorant.

They're on the same team. They'll be happy to lose the election in November so Hakeem Jeffries will become the next Speaker.

Free speech rights include the right to pay the blonde to shut her mouth so the politician can clearly be heard and understood.

The free speech rights of politicians including Trump should be zealously protected by the courts.

Political speech is vitally important. American voters need the ability to be well and clearly informed about issues and proposed solutions.

Fortunately, the Roberts court strongly supports free speech.

Actually I think this bill shows that we have utterly lost our ways as a nation. You cannot start from this bill and plot any direction in which we are headed.
