I would expect VW to close that plant for other reasons — mainly, that it is such a small player in the U.S. auto market to begin with. I just looked up the 2023 sales figures, and it appears that Volkswagen has the lowest sales figure of any auto producer with a U.S. manufacturing presence.

VW already has a reputation for having a very high factory defect rate. This will only make it worse. (I worked in the auto industry for 15 years. Don't let me get started on how United Against Work obstructed every new quality control process we tried to introduce.)

VW spent a lot on E-technology and really want some trend to start up (it won’t). I always thought they missed the boat on selling the VW Scirocco. That was the car with impact and built for guys.

Sales figures may suck, but did the margins?

That plant, if it’s the one I’m thinking of, has received at least $800 mill in subsidies.

That might take a lot of the sting out of the unionization, eh?
