Selling through an FFL will shield you from the profit accusation, but you will probably take a bath vs the current private party market value.One can find a gun to buy from a manufacturer or wholesaler and buy it through a local gun shop who does the paperwork for a nominal fee.
Should be able to sell a gun to another person through a gun shop with an FFL who calls in the background check for a fee too.
You are right, you seldom get a good price for a gun from a gun shop.

A gun shop cannot give you the retail value of the firearm because they would make no money and go out of business.

Many FFLs will call in the NICS check for a fee. Hell, you can get it for free - start buying a gun, and once the check comes back good, tell them never mind and walk out. The problem here is that they're trying to make it if you don't do that, you go to jail.
