The process of defeating Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan killed 12% of Germany and 5% of Japan. The firebombing of their cities, essentially tit-for-tat responses to German and Japanese terror bombings of Allied cities, finally broke their spirit, convinced them they were defeated, gave them an excuse to surrender. They had tried their worst, but it just wasn’t good enough. Similar destruction needs to be visited on the Palestinians so they finally submit. That Palestinian infants need to die so Israeli infants can be safe is regrettable, but yet another iteration of the kind of horror that occurs when weak powers uncork all civilized restraint in hopes of a quick victory, and that victory doesn’t materialize.
