A little tip for anyone seeking typical competitive Federal employment in any kind of sensitive or privileged position.

If you have any arrest in your background, bring it out up front. You have a chance to explain and you probably will be given a fair chance to do so. If however you obscure your past or omit certain details and they find out, you usually are toast. Because the question becomes one of your truthfulness, candor and honesty. If they think you lack any of those things during the hiring process, they will show you the door.

There is a question when applying for a government job, “have you ever been denied a security clearance?” In my case while I had previously held a TS SCI clearance, I was denied follow on clearance. When I protested they granted me another clearance.

But when I applied for another job and was asked if I had ever been denied a clearance, when I truthfully answered yes then I was blackballed from applying without the option to justify my answer.
