Archer T. Gammon (September 11, 1918 January 11, 1945) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration the Medal of Honor for his actions in World War II.

Gammon joined the Army from Roanoke, Virginia in March 1942, and by January 11, 1945 was serving as a Staff Sergeant in Company A, 9th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division. On that day, near Bastogne, Belgium, he destroyed a German machine gun position before beginning a one-man assault on a Tiger Royal tank. He silenced a supporting machine gun emplacement and killed two infantrymen before he was killed by a shot from the tank. For these actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor a year later, on February 13, 1946.

Gammon, aged 26 at his death, was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia.

Staff Sergeant Gammon's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

He charged 30 yards through hip-deep snow to knock out a machinegun and its 3-man crew with grenades, saving his platoon from being decimated and allowing it to continue its advance from an open field into some nearby woods. The platoon's advance through the woods had only begun when a machinegun supported by riflemen opened fire and a Tiger Royal tank sent 88mm. shells screaming at the unit from the left flank. S/Sgt. Gammon, disregarding all thoughts of personal safety, rushed forward, then cut to the left, crossing the width of the platoon's skirmish line in an attempt to get within grenade range of the tank and its protecting foot troops. Intense fire was concentrated on him by riflemen and the machinegun emplaced near the tank. He charged the automatic weapon, wiped out its crew of 4 with grenades, and, with supreme daring, advanced to within 25 yards of the armored vehicle, killing 2 hostile infantrymen with rifle fire as he moved forward. The tank had started to withdraw, backing a short distance, then firing, backing some more, and then stopping to blast out another round, when the man whose single-handed relentless attack had put the ponderous machine on the defensive was struck and instantly killed by a direct hit from the Tiger Royal's heavy gun. By his intrepidity and extreme devotion to the task of driving the enemy back no matter what the odds, S/Sgt. Gammon cleared the woods of German forces, for the tank continued to withdraw, leaving open the path for the gallant squad leader's platoon.

The USAT Sgt. Archer T. Gammon which served the United States Army at the end of World War II was named in his honor.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Loving Obedience

Bible in a Year :

Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.

John 14:21 nlt
During our wedding ceremony, our minister said to me, “Do you promise to love, honor, and obey your husband, until death do you part?” Glancing at my fiancé, I whispered, “Obey?” We’d built our relationship on love and respect—not blind obedience, as the vows seemed to suggest. My husband’s father captured on film that wide-eyed moment when I processed the word obey and said, “I do.”

Over the years, God has shown me that my resistance to the word obey had nothing to do with the incredibly complex relationship between a husband and wife. I’d understood obey to mean “subjugated” or “forced submission,” which Scripture doesn’t support. Rather, the word obey in the Bible expresses the many ways we can love God. As my husband and I celebrate thirty years of marriage, through the power of the Holy Spirit we’re still learning to love Jesus and each other.

When Jesus said, “If you love me, obey my commandments” (John 14:15 nlt), He showed us that obedience to the Scriptures would be the result of an ongoing loving and intimate relationship with Him (vv. 16-21).

Jesus’ love is selfless, unconditional, and never forceful or abusive. As we follow and honor Him in all our relationships, the Holy Spirit can help us see obedience to Him as a wise and loving act of trust and worship.

Reflect & Pray

How does seeing obedience to God as an act of love and trust change your view of His desire for obedience? How has God proven that you can trust Him?

Dear Jesus, please help me love You and others through obedience to the Scriptures.

I just recd this from a Vietnam vet friend.

Vietnam Training Film 1967

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlwbfDUIWnA

Comments from below the video:

“When arrived at basic training in Benning I tripped getting off the bus and broke 2 legs. I still ended up with combat jump wings.”

“So how did we lose?”

“7:00 - Wow! A rare sight, a T-148E1 three-shot semi-automatic grenade launcher.”

“Anybody who runs is a VC. Anybody who stands still is a well-disciplined VC.”

Good evening, radu...did your back survive all of its activities yesterday? Hope you get recoup time day.

No sun here again, but the temps have gotten rid of almost all the snow. Nothing in the back and only about an 4 x 8 patch in the front. Green is coming!

I just recd this messasge from a friend of mine, founder of The Band of Mothers.

“... I’m worried about our Troops in Niger. The latest out of Niger is, after the 75 Special Operators were told to leave immediately, about 1000 of our forces are left on a base they are now sharing with the Russians. Yes, you read that right. The same Russia Russia Russia we have sent trillions of dollars to defeat in Ukraine are now serving on a base with our Troops.

Please call your Congressman & Senators & ask them to help bring our Troops home from Niger before something bad happens to them. These brave Americans deserve our attention & our support. They fight to keep us safe, unlike these whiny, wimpy college kids.

Hey there Kathy.

Can’t say the ol’ bum back is happy today. It got unhappier when it started raining about an hour ago.

It’s great seeing the snow disappear at last. Only a few piles of snow left at the airports, and those used to be huge mountains. And the slush on Lake Hood is almost entirely gone now. One tiny area of it left and there was still quite a bit this morning. There’s been just enough wind today to do the job.

I thought it was my imagination yesterday but nope. There’s a little green grass already on Gull Island.
Spring has finally sprung at Anchorage!

Hey there, radu!

It was pretty cool here today...and cloudy. No rain. It was actually very nice, I thought. When I took my short nap, I crashed and burned. LOL! And I’m very sleepy tonight.

How were things over there? No stormy stuff I hope?
