The annual Little Village Cinco de Mayo parade was rerouted and then cut short Sunday after shots were fired along the parade route, officials said, though paradegoers still reveled the chance to celebrate Mexican culture and history.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to the scene near Cermak Road and Washtenaw Avenue, but they found no one with injuries to take to the hospital.
Chicago police worked with parade organizers to reroute the celebration, which was scheduled to start at noon, heading west along Cermak from Damen Avenue to Marshall Boulevard. Instead, the parade started closer to 12:30 p.m. south on Damen to Blue Island Avenue.
At 1:30 p.m., the Chicago Police Department announced in a statement that the parade had been canceled “out of an abundance of caution.”

My did grew up in a German/Polish area of Chicago. He once told me that I would never survive a walk through his old neighborhood. I'm sure he was exaggerating. /s

Why a Cinco de Mayo parade in the US? We had our own Civil War going at that time. Do we honor other battles or wars in which the US was not involved?
The battles of Lexington and Concord are no longer honored or even mentioned on their dates.

I grew up on the south side (28th & Pulaski) form 1963 - 1975. When we left and headed toward the western suburbs the neighborhoods were becoming gang infested. My parents saved my life by getting me out of there when they did.
Up until 10 years ago, I would on occasion still do a drive by of the old neighborhood. There is no reason to do that any longer unless I want to be a statistic on hey-Jackass. Chicago is lost.
Lol. None of the children of Mexican immigrants that I grew up with in L.A. gave the slightest crap about their Mexican Heritage. Each one was very happy to be an American and not in Mexico.
