Former Senate Candidate Tiffany Smiley Will Challenge Pro-Impeachment GOP Representative Dan Newhouse

Tiffany Smiley, the former triage nurse and veterans’ advocate who ran unsuccessfully against Democratic senator Patty Murray (D., Wash.) in 2022, will announce today that she’s challenging Representative Dan Newhouse (R., Wash.) this cycle, National Review has exclusively learned, setting up a potentially bruising reelection fight for one of two remaining pro-impeachment House Republicans.

A crowded jungle primary in 2022 helped Newhouse (R., Wash.) — one of ten House Republicans who voted to impeach former president Donald Trump three years ago — easily fend off his primary challengers. But his path to reelection may look a bit more complicated in 2024 if the conditions are right for his newest Republican primary challenger.

“It’s time for fresh leadership,” Smiley told National Review in an interview ahead of her announcement. “We have an invasion at the border. We have unrest in our own country. We have an economy where families are struggling to keep up with the price increase, and we have unrest around the globe.”

She also criticized Newhouse for voting to impeach Trump while representing Washington’s deep-red Fourth District. “That’s not a vote that represents the voters of the Fourth District,” Smiley said. “Donald Trump is our nominee, and we need Donald Trump’s policies in this country to save this country going forward. So given Newhouse’s past history with Trump, I don’t believe that Newhouse is the best person to legislate with a Trump administration.”

There's probably some danger of a repeat of the 2022 "jungle primary" result. If Newhouse's Republican challengers again split the vote, then Newhouse could again be the highest-finishing Republican. Some Democrat could take second place. Then the November runoff would again be RINO versus Democrat.

According to the NR article, Trump has endorsed a candidate who, in 2022, finished fourth, with only 12% of the vote. Maybe he should reconsider that in light of Smiley's entry. In 2022, she ran for the Senate against long-time Democratic incumbent Patty Murray. Murray had the advantages of incumbency and huge name recognition (she'd been in the Senate since 1993). Smiley lost by 15%. That's a decent showing in state where Biden beat Trump by 19%. In this very red Congressional district, Smiley should have a good chance.

Smiley's run in 2022 was always a lost cause but one thing she showed was a major ability to raise money. Despite the legendary efficiency of the Democrat dirty money laundry known as "ActBlue", Smiley actually raised MORE money from individual contributions than doddering old Patsy Murray (!).

2022 Senatorial Election Results for Washington

Despite the GOP allegedly paying for a few tepid ads on Smiley's behalf, Smiley had zilch as far as party support; Murray had millions from the Rats and was able to outspend Smiley. Not that she really needed to because Smiley never had a chance regardless of $$$$.

The Trump-endorsed (for now) candidate in WA-4 in 2024 is Jerrod Sessler, who got 12% in the open primary in 2022. Sessler is a decent conservative from what I know of him. If Tiffany Smiley can bring her 2022-style fundraising to this race, she will be the favored challenger to RINO Newhouse, and Trump will stick his finger into the wind and likely change horses once he sees that she's more probable to make it to November than Sessler is.

Either way, whatever it takes to get rid of Newhouse is what should be done. Unlike what happened under similar conditions in WA-3 in 2022, no Democrat has a chance of winning this district in a general election, though one could make the runoff when Smiley, Sessler and whoever else split the conservative vote.

I agree with your assessment.

Jerrod Sessler has virtually no chance of unseating Dan Newhouse in 2024. Newhouse crushed him in 2022. Tiffany Smiley is a much better candidate.

I’m always amazed when Republicans vote overwhelmingly for RINOs in safe Republican districts. The worst RINO in the House of Representatives is Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania’s 1st congressional district). He’s in a safe Republican district and will be reelected by a wide margin in 2024.

The Democrats would never allow this to happen in a Democrat safe district.

Republican voters are their own worst enemy.

Trump loves endorsing RINOs. He’ll stay with Sessler over Smiley even if Smiley has a better chance of defeating Newhouse.

How does a complete retard stay in power? It’s actually fascinating that voters are so stupid collectively and individually laugh at this troll.

Correction.

I didn’t mean to imply that Sessler is a RINO. I meant to say that Trump has been known to favor RINOs over other Republican candidates even in close primary races.

Thanks for the info! You’re right that the ability to raise money is a key consideration. I’m glad to learn that Smiley has done well in that regard. It also means that she starts with a large donor list from her 2022 race. Many of them will presumably help her out again.

"The worst RINO in the House of Representatives is Brian Fitzpatrick"

True (Fitz is a terrible RINO).

"He’s in a safe Republican district"

Patently false. His district is nothing like Newhouse's. It's a super-marginal district and is rated as dead-even; probably should be D+1.

Profile of Congressional District 1, PA

Scum though he is (far more liberal than even his brother was), Fitzpatrick fits the district well. The Democrats are spending more this year than they did in 2022 against him, but it's just a token effort because the Rats have no real reason to oppose him on ideological grounds.

If the shit hits the fan in November and the GOP is swamped by any kind of "blue wave", Fitzpatrick could and probably will be a casualty. The district being what it is -- a leftward-trending area in the Philly suburbs (the new Democrat vote fraud epicenter of PA -- neither he nor any Republican at the state or federal level is anything remotely resembling "safe" under any conditions.

“I meant to say that Trump has been known to favor RINOs over other Republican candidates even in close primary races.”

Would you elaborate on that? I’m a little hazy on the details. There might have been cases where Trump endorses the less conservative candidate in favor of some rich guy who can self-fund, but I don’t think Trump has favored RINOs very often.

Easy on the eyes. Lowering her sights this time around. Hopefully she’ll win and be good for 10 years.

Trump Endorsements

House of Representatives primary endorsements 2024:

Michael Turner (R-OH)
Troy Balderson (R-OH)
Mike Bost (R-IL)
Hal Rogers (R-KY)
John Carter (R-TX)

* This is only the house in 2024. There are more.

My research shows that they are all RINOs based on their voting records. I hope you will verify the information.
