Road Trip: Parks Reserve Forces Training Area, California

CAcampparks2

Parks Reserve Forces Training Area (PRFTA), commonly known as Camp Parks, is a United States Army facility located in Dublin, California that is currently an active mobilization and training center for U.S. Army Reserve personnel to be used in case of war or natural disaster.

Soon after the creation of the Seabees at the beginning of World War II, the U.S. Navy built a West Coast replacement and recuperation center for Naval Construction Battalions returning from overseas. Camp Parks was established on November 26, 1942, having been named in honor of Rear Admiral Charles W. Parks, Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), the World War I chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks.

Adjacent to Camp Parks to the east, was Camp Shoemaker and the U.S. Naval Hospital Shoemaker, also built during the war. The three Navy bases located side by side were called "Fleet City".

CAcampparks5

In 1946, at the end of World War II, the United States Secretary of the Navy disestablished the three facilities, and from 1946 to 1951, the Navy leased much of the land to the County of Alameda for use as Santa Rita Jail. Thousands of Quonset huts and barracks and other buildings were subsequently dismantled through sales conducted by the War Assets Administration.

Camp Parks sat unused until the U.S. Air Force established it as a basic training center in 1951 during the Korean War, and renamed the facility Parks Air Force Base. The Air Force almost completely rebuilt the base. Base personnel were initially housed in temporary facilities and ate from a field mess.

The first group of airmen arrived at Camp Parks in the Summer of 1951, and mass training began in March 1952 as the 3275th Air Indoctrination Wing. In 1953, Air Base Defense classes started as the Air Force transitioned the base defense mission from the Army.

Parks has a primary mission of exercising the functions of command, training, security, administration, servicing and supply to all troop units, military activities and other governmental agencies assigned or attached.

New and state-of-the-art training facilities have been built and more are planned. In the garrison area are administrative and classroom buildings, upgraded housing, a remodeled dining facility, a modern lodging facility, an informative history center, and other support and training facilities.

Parks RFTA is the only local training facility for more than 11,000 Army Reserve Soldiers in the San Francisco Bay Area where a wide variety of training facilities are available. Reserve Units permanently stationed at Parks RFTA conduct weekend inactive duty training throughout the year, and Reserve Component units travel to the base for their two-week annual training.

Hiya radu, sorry I missed ya last night.

We had a wet weekend so yardwork was put on hold. I didn't do much over the weekend but son was over last night for dinner and hanging out.

How was your weekend?

I heard you had to evacuate the event both nights over the weekend. Sounded pretty rough. Glad to hear everyone was safe.

At least you’re getting a break from today’s mess. Pretty rough in northern OK. Been watching several storm chasers and one has a tornado onscreen now.

We’re expecting some yeeha over here the next three days.
A rough Spring for a lot of folks.

Hiya, PRO!

Got a break this weekend, did ya? Wet weather will put the kibosh on yardwork, that’s for sure. Same problem here.
Sounds like last night was fun, at least, hangin’ out with your son.

A pretty quiet weekend here. FReepmail coming.

Howdy, Kathy.

I hope your week’s getting off on decent footing. No monkey wrenches thrown in the cogs.

Sure is nice to see Lake Hood ICE FREE. Lots of seaplanes taking off and landing.

And I saw RAIN on the cam last night and earlier today. WOOHOO! Y’all needed that.

God-Given Gifts

Bible in a Year :

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.

Romans 12:6

Decades ago, I went to a college retreat where everyone was talking about a personality test. “I’m an ISTJ!” one said. “I’m an ENFP,” another chirped. I was mystified. “I’m an ABCXYZ,” I joked.

Since then, I’ve learned a lot about that test (the Myers-Briggs) and others such as the DiSC assessment. I find them fascinating because they can help us understand ourselves and others in helpful, revealing ways—shedding light on our preferences, strengths, and weaknesses. Provided we don’t overuse them, they can be a useful tool God uses to help us grow.

Scripture doesn’t offer us personality tests. But it does affirm each person’s uniqueness in God’s eyes (see Psalm 139:14-16; Jeremiah 1:5), and it shows us how God equips all of us with a unique personality and unique gifts to serve others in His kingdom. In Romans 12:6, Paul begins to unpack this idea, when he says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

Those gifts, Paul explains, are not for us alone but for the purpose of serving God’s people, Christ’s body (v. 5). They’re an expression of His grace and goodness, working in and through all of us. They invite each of us to be a unique vessel in God’s service. .

Reflect & Pray

What gifts has God given you to serve others? If you’re not sure what your gifts are, who might help you get a better sense of those God-given gifts?

Father, thank You for the gifts You’ve given me. Please help me to embrace the ways You’ve equipped me to love and serve others in Your kingdom.

Find out how you can understand yourself and others.

Has it cooled off enough for you to be able to enjoy some patio time this evening?

Hey there, radu!

It’s still about 83 but feels pretty good. However, the wind has blown all day, and it’s still a bit too breezy to be comfy for me out there. Maybe a bit later.

How were things there? Heard there were tornadoes somewhere in TN. Any near you? Did you get out on your patio?
