It is almost always the colonels that lead or attempt to lead a coup. Ever notice that?

I have a theory about why that is so. They are high enough up the food chain to marshal authority and resources but low enough not to be a lick spittle part of the political system and; they will never rise above colonel because they are not wired to be just a lick spittle.

Colonels or junior generals. Napolean was a major general when he overthrew the Directorate in Paris. Senior generals are always loyal to the regime, even if they personally despise the leadership. They have everything to lose and not enough to gain.
