An alarming study has spotlighted how 42 million food stamp recipients spend their welfare handouts on ultra-processed junk food.
Coca-Cola, Sprite and other soft drinks are the most commonly-bought items via the $135 billion-a-year Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a new study says.
Candy, potato chips, frozen pizza, ice cream, cookies, and other ultra-processed food dominates the top 20 items, says a report from the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC).
Report author Matthew Dickerson says recipients spend 'spend significant portions of their allotments on junk food.'
These 'non-nutritious foods' include 'sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health,' says the 35-page study.
The prevalence of junk food is another reason to trim SNAP, which has ballooned this century and gets recipients hooked on handouts, says Dickerson.
The research comes as Washington lawmakers debate the text of an updated farm bill, with Republicans gunning to cut some $27 billion worth of nutrition program funding over 10 years

Better than one in eight Americans receives SNAP. Somewhere in a little corner of Hell, LBJ is smiling.
Cut $27 billion over ten years. That’s 2.7 billion per year. Annual budget is 135 billion. That’s a 2% cut. Cry me a river.
Yeah a real “shock” result
I have heard a lot of “transfer payments” wind up “transferred” to riverboat casinos.
Geez I only get $23.00 of snap as a senior, that don’t buy much so no junk food.
One thing I’ve seen is people using food stamps to buy bottled water, and then empty the bottles onto the street and turn them in for the 10 cent deposit refund. Quite a waste of taxpayer money.
Change the first word in the name from Supplemental to Primary and problem solved! /s
That would be the welfare $$ not the food
So it looks like their diet is a fairly standard processed food American diet.

That's why nobody cares what these mutants use SNAP benefits for.

McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, etc all lobby hard to allow food stamps to be used for their products.
Its utterly corrupt. I know Ivy League MBA and graduate students, entire departments of such students in fact, who get food stamps.
One simply applies, claims little income as a student, and the monthly deposits start flowing.
Anyone who has stood behind a food stamper in the checkout line is fully aware of the garbage food that is purchased.
In fact our entire social welfare system has become a total scam.
In California, the combination of a totally unaccountable and non transparent welfare system combined with an pervasive false identity industry set up for illegal aliens allows people to set up multiple false identities and to receive welfare benefits under those multiple fake identities.
This includes many of the governemtnofficals who administrate the systems and the politicians who award the benefits.
It not for nothing that welfare officials are strictly forbidden to use photographic, finger print , DNA or other bio metric identity data to track welfare recipients.
