Liberal Press Begins the Attack on Conservative Bill Simon (my headline)
Yahoo News ^ | Tuesday January 08 10:13 AM EST | MATT LAIT and SCOTT GLOVER

Tuesday January 08 10:13 AM EST Simon Has Stock in Alleged Profiteer By MATT LAIT and SCOTT GLOVER Republican gubernatorial candidate William E. Simon Jr. owns stock in a natural gas company accused of taking advantage of California's energy woes by creating an artificial supply shortage that sent prices soaring.

Simon, a Los Angeles investment banker, owns about $16,750 of stock in El Paso Natural Gas Co., according to campaign aides and economic disclosure forms filed by his campaign. Simon and his family's investment company have owned the stock since 1988, Simon's brother and campaign manager said.

El Paso Natural Gas, a subsidiary of Houston-based energy giant El Paso Corp. (NYSE:EPG - news), was accused last year of withholding natural gas from the Southern California market to create an artificial shortage that would boost gas prices. Company officials vehemently deny the charges, which are the subject of a pending complaint before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (news - web sites). Simon, son of former Treasury secretary and investor William E. Simon, was unavailable for comment on his investment, his spokesman said.

Sal Russo, Simon's campaign consultant, said the candidate was not aware of his financial interest in El Paso Natural Gas until he reviewed his disclosure statement late last year. Russo added that Simon, upon learning of the investment, did not perceive any conflict of interest and has no plans to divest the stock.

Liberals just don't understand the concept of stock and investments. I wonder if they are going to go after Davis every time a State Bureaucrat under his control is the subject of an unfounded allegation?

The liberals are clearly intimidated by Bill Simon, the newest rising star on the Conservative scene. We're going to see more and more of this kind of hollow rhetoric as the campaign progresses, an certainly after he becomes governor later this year.

If the lefties weren't attacking Simon I would be upset. That would be proof that he was not hitting their collective nerves. www.simonforgovernor.com

Right on, ElkGroveDan! Why doesn't the liberal press get all over Riordan for holding up power in L.A.? Or all over Gray Davis for hiring people who have a conflict of interest (like taking money from Southern California Edison and the State of California, working on negotiations with SCE?)????

The hypocracy of the liberal media is so pathetic I don't know how anyone can't see through it.

I'm glad that Bill Simon is a conservative, that he has a deep understanding and knowledge of money and finance ... after the last three years where Davis has increased government spending by 37% and turned a multi-billion surplus into a potential $10 billion deficit (or more!) ... we need someone who can turn the state around.

Go Simon!

Accused?

Wasn't Bill Clinton "accused" of rape?

And who accused El Paso Corp of "withholding" natural gas from California? Governor Gray 'Red' Davis?

They won't do that until Riordan has the nomination, then they'll beat him over the head with it.

This man is worth, I don't know, $100 million dollars. $16K is not even a rounding error, there is no allegation that he had anything to do with anything related to this company, or that there is anything that ever even happened involving this company. So the new liberal theory is that Republicans are to be charged with all alleged but uproven wrongdoing by any company in which they own stock. Disgusting.

Naturally, they'll go after the one which they fear most.

Jones I haven't a whisper about from them, and their buddy Liberal Dick? Just some Dem hack making cracks about his age.

But Simon they fear, as well they should.

To see how desperate the liberal media is, they are attacking Simon for attacking Davis for spending too much on electricity because of his incompetence? Isn't that Simon arguing for paying less to energy companies, including the one that his family has stock in?

If they were honest reporters, they would be praising Simon for wanting policies that would reduce energy bills, including those owned to El Paso.

The bias in the media never ceases to amaze me.

SO WHAT! He and his family own it since 1988. Is it illegal to own stock in any company? How many of our illustrious congressmen/women and senators own stock and in what companies. It didn't hurt the Clintonistas when Hillary turned $1,000 into $100,000 in futures, or did anyone forget that one?? What about Diane Feinstein and her husband's stake in China? Are the Dems going to raise a ruckus about that now that she is up for election? I will campaign for Simon because he is the best man for the job. The fact that he owns stock in El Paso Gas shows that he believes in America.
