SACRAMENTO - The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, a leading taxpayer advocate organization, today announced its endorsement of Bill Simon for Governor.
"Bill Simon has shown himself to be a thoughtful and articulate candidate dedicated to protecting the rights of taxpayers in California," said HJTA President Jon Coupal. "Already this year Governor Davis has hit Californians with a $1.2 billion sales tax increase. He resorted to ambiguous budget rhetoric that has led policymakers to believe he is openly encouraging another tax increase this year.
"With the depressed state economy, a tax increase is the last thing Californians should be burdened with," Coupal continued. "In contrast, Bill Simon has led all the Republican candidates by presenting a detailed economic stimulus package. Through tax cuts, the repealing of 'Job-Killer Legislation', and a reduction in government waste, the Simon plan would revitalize California's economy. Bill Simon will be a great Governor for California, and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association is proud to endorse him."
"It is an honor to have the support of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, a group that has been defending the taxpayers since it championed Proposition 13 in 1978," Simon said. "The state of California is facing an economic crisis as a result of the careless overspending of Governor Gray Davis. Under Davis, state spending has increased a whopping 37 percent, while the population has grown only 5 percent. Now it appears the Governor's solution to meeting this imbalance will be another massive tax increase, and that isn't right.
"California needs less taxes, less regulation and less government waste, not more," Simon said. "Howard Jarvis was a private citizen who solved a major problem in California - rising property taxes that were literally forcing families from their homes. I pride myself on being a doer dedicated to public service, and I will use Jarvis as an inspiration to do the right thing for California taxpayers. I thank the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association for their work on behalf of California taxpayers and I am looking forward to working with them in Sacramento next November."
