Gov. Bob Holden assured about 500,000 Missouri taxpayers on Wednesday that they'll get their tax refunds by August - but added that the money will be sent sooner if the House agrees to use the state's "Rainy Day Fund."
At a news conference, Holden and state Revenue Director Carol Fischer said the fund would allow the state to accelerate payments of about $230 million in tax refunds delayed by the state's budget troubles. The number of affected taxpayers - and the total amount of refunds - was higher than last week's estimate.

This is the type of issue and story that can and WILL have long term consequences for the Democratic party in Missouri. Consequences that can give us a Republican senator in November and a Republican govenor in 2004.
Missourians MUST use this opportunity to contact lawmakers asking them to hold the line on Bob "I'm Holden onto your Money" and his attempts to spend the state into bankruptcy.
I call on all Missouri Free Republic members to contact their state reps and senators (especially the ones mentioned in the article), call into local talk radio shows, write letters to the editors of their local papers, and contact news organizations asking for more coverage of this attempt to raise taxes by keeping the refunds from the people of Missouri.

Where did all the money go from the good decade of growth? And how is a freaking baseball stadium in St Louis going to help the mid Missouri economy if we have to pay higher taxes to give corporate welfare. Especially when the state alleges it cannot pay its bills now, and our roads are nearly unsafe to drive on?
We need to give Missouri a lesson in how to live within the budget like our familys and businesses, and how to prioritize what is necessary for the safety of the people, before we consider luxury and leisure for a privliged few.
Time for a tea party. And say no to ANY new taxes based on pie in the sky proposals
