[history]
With Gov. Gray Davis expected to sign a landmark global warming bill this month, California may be on the verge of exporting another trend to the rest of the United States: tougher gas mileage standards.
For two decades, Detroit Democrats and Texas Republicans have helped defeat efforts in Congress to increase fuel economy rules for cars and trucks.

American auto makers should just write off California. Do the rest of us a favor, please.

California quit being the trendsetter about 10 years ago. Now their legislature and governor are laughingstocks.
This bill will work about as well as California's "trendsetting" electricity (non)deregulation bill.

California can sink into the Pacific anytime it wants.

Time for the auto companies to quit selling new cars in California.....just flood Arizona and Nevada's dealers....

American auto makers should just write off California. Do the rest of us a favor, please.I wonder how long the citizens of Kali would let this law stand if all the automakers were to refuse to sell cars there after this law became effective. My guess, about 10 seconds.

Consumers already can buy small cars, but don't, he said. The top 10 cars sold in America, ranked by fuel economy, make up only 1.5 percent of vehicles sold. Does this really matter? Its consumer choice and the free market that enviro-freaks and the California politburo have to eliminate to achieve their objectives.
We, the consuming general public, are the enemy.

I heard something about this reported on my local AM Rush station down here in Florida. The news reader said that 58% of Californians drive SUV's. He must mean that 58% of new auto/car sales are SUV's. I know there are lots of SUV's in CA - I've seen them - but this percent sounds too high.

Have a lincon continental and looking around for a nice 4X4 cummins diesel dodge truck....but there sure are a lot of SUVs on the roads...trucks are also very popular.
Most small vehicles would get blown off the road by one of those giant 16 wheel semi trailer rigs.
If greyout davis wants to save of gas ...why doesn't he get those Sinclar electric three wheelers that were sold in UK in the late 70s....lets see how many of those would be sold.

Nevada and other surrounding states can look forward to economic good times now as thousands of Kalifornia businesses relocate. Good going Gray!

Very simple solution for the automakers that doesn't require pulling out of California. Sell only Hugo's, Geo Metro's and other such ultra-sub-compacts in California. THen wait for the citizen's backlash. I'd love to see celebrities that back this bill to be forced to drive in the limosine version of a Geo!

fence-sitting state lawmakers, along with the governor, received a barrage of telephone calls and letters urging a ``yes'' vote, from former President Bill Clinton, actor Paul Newman, and White House candidates Sen. Joseph Leiberman, D-Conn., Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.Just the kind of crowd I'd expect to find this chump in.

Sell only Hugo's, Geo Metro's and other such ultra-sub-compacts in California.Good idea. And think of all the advertising money they could conserve.

My understand of that stat is 48% of Californians own SUVs and I'm the proud owner of one...if I have to will go out of state to purchase my next one...or perhaps I should just do it now!

We, the consuming general public, are the enemy.I think you missed his point. What he was saying is that there isn't any point in mandating the manufacture of vehicles that are already available but not commercially viable. He's actually agreeing with you.

You may be able to go out of state to purchase, but just wait until you try to get California tags. You'll probably be hit with a huge "impact fee." It's what the state does to people who move in with cars that don't meet the California emissions standard. Buying out of state isn't a perfect solution.

Very good point and not sure if you're aware but the D's in Calif passed a trippling of the license fees already. Davis is forcing us to have our taxes "bail his deficit out." It's a horrible situation and we're a very unhappy group of people...hopefully enough people to actually do something...like "vote him out."

California can sink into the Pacific anytime it wants. Cool! And which web site are YOU going to go to then?
To: Seeking the truth
There's a lot of SUV's...no denying it. But 58%? I really really doubt that.
