Republicans may be able to take the post of California State Treasurer.
This would be a stunning upset - putting a fiscally conservative GOPer - Greg Conlon - at the helm of the treasury of the 6th largest economy in the world.
The stunning news comes from recent polls which show Conlon and Angelides locked in a dead heat. Not GOP polls. But typically liberal-leaning polls.
The more stunning news is that incumbent liberal Angelides is sitting on his cash for a future run for higher office (at one point he thought of challenging incumbent Gray Davis in the Democratic primary. Instead now he wants to use re-election as a springboard to Governor if Davis runs for President).
The problem of course - the Republican is badly underfunded. Through a clever strategy he has secured in-kind advertising from some TV station owners. They will run his ads for free throughout California.
He now needs to fund a full slate of advertising in every media market in the state.
So will 100 FReepers send him a last minute contribution? Whatever you can afford. $5? $25? $100? $1,000?

Below is the commercial the Conlon campaign is trying desperately to get on the air to pull off the stunning victory:

And here is the recent endorsement by the Orange County Register which includes the mention of one of the most recent polls (there are many showing the neck tied or within 2-3 points) - the Field Poll, showing Conlon behind by 2% with a margin of error at 3%. This even though it showed Simon trailing Davis by a wider margin.
Californians stand poised to vote Republican for State Treasurer (Conlon) and State Controller (McClintock).
But only if you HELP Greg Conlon Pull Off the Upset of Campaign 2002!!!

You would think the state treasurer's race, with Democratic incumbent Phil Angelides sitting on a $6.4 million war chest and Republican challenger Greg Conlon with about $250,000, would be a runaway for Mr. Angelides. But the most recent Field Poll shows Mr. Angelides with only a 2 percentage-point lead (and a 3 percent margin of error). So it might be unexpectedly interesting.
The state treasurer manages the state's investments, administers the sale of bonds and notes, and manages state government investments. He or she sits on several boards, including those of the public employees and the state teachers retirement funds.
...
As treasurer, Mr. Angelides, a businessman and developer and longtime Democratic activist, has used his positions on the various boards to push for the funds to ban investments in companies that establish offshore headquarters. We object to politicizing investment strategy.
Mr. Angelides has spent most of his time dealing with the energy crisis. He is responsible for selling almost $12 billion in bonds to pay for the energy purchases and long-term contracts the governor's people committed taxpayers to, which Mr. Angelides has delayed for a year.
He also sponsored legislation to create a California Consumer Power and Financing Authority, which is envisioned as the basis for setting up a government electricity utility in California. We opposed creation of the authority, arguing that the state should not insert itself further into the energy business.
Conlon, a longtime CPA and businessman, differs on almost every issue. He was a Pete Wilson-appointed member of the Public Utilities Commission when restructuring was done in 1996, and only regrets that he couldn't get the votes for flexible "real-time" consumer pricing, as most economists recommend. The cap on retail prices, combined with Gov. Davis' inaction when a short-term supply problem hit, he believes, accounts for the crisis.
Mr. Conlon believes he is doing as well as he is because he's a CPA and voters are discontented with the treasurer who presided over the end of a surplus and the coming of a $24 billion deficit. "I'll pester the governor and Legislature about the need for fiscal responsibility every day," he said.
Mr. Conlon could make the treasurer's office, much as Kathleen Connell has done as controller, a kind of bully pulpit of fiscal prudence to keep free-spending Democrats in line. Mr. Angelides has shown no such inclination.

Contribute $5, $25, $100 or $5,000 or ??? To Conlon for Treasurer Last Minute Blitz
Even just a modest media buy will be enough to push Conlon above Angelides as undecideds at the last minute decide to go with the challenger (Republican Conlon) after the Davis-Angelides Energy Crisis and Budget Crisis destroyed California's fiscal health.
I am doing my own this week too!
One of the recent articles (maybe the Union Tribune in San Diego where my family lives) had a quote by him talking about how there are both responsibilties you have to make sure California doesn't be made a wreck like Davis did and proactive ways you should nonetheless seek to protect the taxpayers money. Made me happy because I thought "hey he gets it" haha!
It's a .pdf file, so you'll need Acrobat Reader... it's free, and chances are good you already have it on your computer. Try the link and see.
Print it using the printer-icon button in the Acrobat toolbar in your browser (not File|Print in your browser's menu). It's intended for double-sided printing using single pieces of paper-- no stapling needed if you do it that way, and saves trees! ;-) Print one side, then invert the paper and feed it through a second time for the second side. Fold, and sally forth to get out the vote!
Give this to friends, walk your neighborhood, take it to stores, give a wad of 'em to your school, hand some out at your house of worship, at clubs, at stores and small businesses...
Let's retire Gray Davis!
Let's show the media and RINOs that "It's the base, stupid!"
Let's show Gray Davis that money can't buy him love ...or re-election!
Freepers and RLC activists can claim considerable credit for nominating Bill Simon, so now let's elect him!
Looking for some Republican lovin!!!
dUMP tHE dEMS!!!!
